I'm trying so hard to learn, though. But there is so much that I just don't understand.

I'm a quack addict personally <3

Hey...how do you like your "Oregon Mini" geese? I saw those on Holderread's list...they look cute!

hm. now I have a situation... I had inquired about some hatching eggs a while back and the lady said they wouldn't be available until march so I said I'd be happy to wait. Then in the meantime, I found day old baby chicks and ordered them. They came yesterday, at the same time as my big hatchery order. Now, I just got an email from the hatching eggs person to confirm the order. I had totally forgotten about the hatching eggs inquiry!!! :O

The cost isn't the issue. In fact, I have a hen that seems to be going broody right now... The issue is that I have way too many chicks right now! LOL They would be 4 blue ameraucana, 4 FBCM and 4 olive eggers eggs. EEK! lol, my husband would probably kill me if I had any more chicks at this point. I have 40 chicks and 20 older chickens at this point. Of course, 10 of them are for other people and I'm raising them for those folks. I wonder if I can find anyone else who would want some chicks around here. LOL What did I do??

Eggs or chicks thats a hard one. I like the idea that when I get chicks that you have something right then but incubating eggs is fun and hardach at the same time. Like when you have eggs shipped from back east and you wait and wait and nothing not one chick than you do it all again and only get 2 chicks that about kills me. But if you get eggs close to home that shipping thing wont happen.
I guess Im no good to help you on this one, but I do know that once you start hatching you just cant stop

its so much fun (most of the time)

La Sombra, I am in almost the exactly same situation as you and I'm starting to panic a bit. We have 25 birds out in the coops. I have 10 chicks in the brooder box. I ordered 3 different batches of eggs, and the first arrived today. That order was 18 BBS bantam cochins, I also have 12 lavender bantam cochins (+ he threw in 4 LF black cochin eggs) as well as 6 BLRW (and she threw in a few Blue Andalusion eggs) + we have a bowl full of our own black bantam cochins sitting here waiting to go in.....I'm not even sure they will all fit in the incubator!!! ARGGHH!!!!

I do have a lady coming on Sunday to take 4 of our birds, and I've offered up the 2 RIR hens to Steve above, we will probably be placing ads on craigslist next month for the older birds and/or laying hens we can part with. I am also assuming I will have some extra roosters in my hatch that will have to go.

RobB, what's the deal with Monroe Farm & Feed accepting birds? I keep meaning to ask them and forgetting. Do they take any/all birds?

Djackjr, well I would say hatching eggs because it's so neat to watch them hatch, and you can get almost any breed/variety here on BYC and I think supporting our members here is a great thing. However, if you only want standard size and only want pullets, than chicks might be the way to go because they can sex most standard birds. Bantams they don't sex for the most part, so you might as well do hatching eggs. I also can't bear to put those little chicks through the mail anymore after we lost so many last year, that's another reason why I lean towards eggs.

Thats not a hard one for me

I have no interest or patience to hatch eggs and its about the same for raising day old chicks. after raising nine chickens for five months and nothing to show for it, I will ONLY buy chickens that are laying or close to it

No idea, but I would get them out of there anyway. Mine couldn't get to my chickens, but 3 full grown drakes on a half grown baby has to be just as bad. Someone's gonna get hurt, maybe you should have kept that mean rooster
