I am getting the stuff from Lowes tonight to build the coop. I want to make it a tractor-style and have a good sized pen for them to run around in.... I only have .18 acres, so I get to make the best of the space. Any advice on lighting or fans etc in there?

Hi BJ,

We have about that amount of land, as well. Our coop has no lighting or fans and neither does our run. After doing it this way for the past year as an experiment I currently have plans to install a lighting system for the run in the fall. Some additional lighting to provide them with a 12-14 hour day helps egg production and does not affect their health. Chickens do not appreciate lighting in their coop. On the few very cold days we have had I turned on some red heating lamps and all of our current chickens roosted outside the coop! Just build the coop with lots of small gaps or some hardware mesh protected air vents on one side. Those are my recommendations.

We got eight chicks and two magpie ducks together last March The ducks turned out to be drakes ( think thats the mistake) every thing was fine. The ducks would stay in the run outside with the chickens but not inside in the coop (they are too messy) Then about two months ago one duck started picking on my BR rooster. he would poke the rooster in the chest then run around and hit him in the butt

We all thought it was real funny

until he started picking on the pullets. He would grabbed them by the head and start pulling them around the run or the yard. they couldn't get loose. Now when he grabs one, I chase him with a stick and I put him back in the run by himself.
My daughter (ducks are hers) and I are arguing over getting rid of the ducks I want to, she doesn't

.

Maybe if the ducks were female, we wouldn't have a problem

Zgoatlady!! Such cute pics and sooooooooooo many kids!!! Hope your back is feeling better!

To get the image to show up, you need to click the Img button when writing your post and then put the URL address (what you had above for each pic) between the two Img tags that will show up. You will need one Img tag at the front of the URL and one at the end. They will automatically be put in your post when you click the button. Go between them, and paste your URL in the middle. Do this for each photo. HTH!

I'll install some motion lights on top of the coop then, so they have light when they are out.... or maybe just a timer is easier. Coop has to look nice, per my wife... so I will be making the neatest chicken coop in the area if at all possible. We have a dog too (the wife's dog) who already got the peeps v1.0, so I have to take great care to safeguard v2.0.... Thanks.
