Since we don't have any better storage area outside our house, we use space in our utility room for all our animal feed. Because of all the rain, our containers were just getting damp no matter what we used. The only thing we store outside is the shavings because if they get a little damp I just throw it in the run. I only use shavings for the nest boxes anyways.

We found sand in the summer and straw in the winter works best in our run. We have yet to dig it all out and that will be a task we are NOT looking forward to, but I think it should be great to throw over our compost heap with all that sand and straw and organic matter, just what our clay soil needs. I hope to use it for a raised bed.

My chickens seem to be used to both water, heat and snow already and they are only a year old.

I think someone dieliberately stomped on that box, and that is why I will do insurance on any ships and that is only if I cannot drive and get them.

grrr, I have a leaking waterer. I was thinking that my chicks were maybe just drinking a lot because they're getting a lot bigger... but the coop was also smelling and I went to clean it out the other day and found matted bedding close to the waterer, plus damp floorboards beneath. Not good. So, I moved the waterer closer to the door so I could scoop that stuff out easier if it happens again. It still leaked so I put a plastic container under it to see how much was leaking. It's a ton of water. It's almost as if I didn't have a lid on the thing! It's a new waterer... got it last month, one of those plastic ones that hold 3 gallons. So now, I just filled up the water area and then closed it off and I'll have to go out there periodically to let more water out. What a pain. This won't work on days when I won't be here much. What's the point in getting a 3 gal waterer if it doesn't work??? arrrggghhh

Fix the hole with 100% silicone, make sure if it is the hard white plastic kind that you scratch up the smooth surface first to give the silicone something to stick too.
We use window and door caulk that is 100% silicone.
Hope that works !
Or maybe you can take it back ?

I might not be able drive you around on those nights, I'm thinking that I might not be able to drive fast enough to lose the watch dog.

Oh wait Miss Gabby is coming into heat. We could use her to distract that dog.

I would be interested in knowing more, maybe you could start another thread in the Random Ramblings section.

Hi WA friends, I got this via mail
425 Magazine needs help!

DeAnn Rossetti from 425 Magazine writes: "I am looking for people who live within the city limits of Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond or Issaquah, Washington (state) who have chickens as pets or raise them for eggs/meat in their backyards. I need to interview some 'chicken parents' for an article for 425 Magazine on Urban Chicken farming. I am also looking for Eastside (again, Washington only) Gardening or Home Centers that have "how to raise chickens' classes specifically for prospective urban chicken farmers, and Eastside places that sell baby chicks or pullets. Thank you."

NOTE: The deadline to respond is this Saturday (June 19th) at 5pm EST. The following link is no longer valid after the deadline. Send your name, contact information, expertise and where you live in Eastern Washington State (ONLY) to: [email protected].
