What a happy surprise! Chances are we know them, it's a fairly small group of CHI host families - I'm driving the afternoon carpool for the kids who are staying south of Oak Harbor. If you're comfortable doing so, it'd be fun to know which host family is yours.

Thank you! Hubby and I thought we'd try this for awhile, while we get ourselves licensed to be foster parents. Our student, Jason, is a real cutie and so tall! The tallest in his group and a big basketball fan so we took him to the sports shop to buy him a basketball to play while he's here. He took it into nearly every shop we went into afterward!

Not sure we can get him to do the same with our chickens!

I'm looking forward to moments like that, we have three little Black Silkie chicks doing their best to burn everyone's eyes with their outstanding cuteness!

My Silkies are definitely everyone's favorite as well. My husband, who grew up on a farm in Scotland and never had any interest in doing farm animals again, keeps telling me he wishes we would have started with the Silkies and just stuck with them. He's in awe of how calm they are and what great mothers they make.

L0rraine,

My husband and I were city kids (I'm from Brooklyn and he's from Phili), so this has been a grand adventure for us. We started with poultry by getting ducks for our Border Collie to herd, then by rescuing two Rhodies and were absolutely charmed by these bossy hens! Josh has been so amazing during this process, he started out hating the chickens and now he walks around with one perched on his shoulder - his favorites are a Silver Laced Hamburg and a Polish. He's very good with them, having gotten over that impulse to startle when the chickens flap their wings in your hands. He's really getting a kick out of the Silkie chicks - they are fussy little 3 week olds right now.

Now we're talking about getting a 5 acre farm when he retires from the Navy in 2.5 years because we're just so poultry obsessed. For me, the biggest bonus will be having a true natural pond instead of our little kiddie pools and water bins. That's one chore I won't mind getting rid of!

My first eggs! YAY!

on a sad note... not sure what is going wrong but three turkeys have pipped so far, the first died....the other 2 are having serious hatching issues...I am torn, I know I am not suppose to help but these guys are gonna die (I think) if I don't

BUT, this is super cute---my other hen(diane) who already has two ducklings (they are 2 weeks old now)--is sharing them with her(daisy)... Daisy officially got off the nest on thursday--came home and she was over swimming, and had scattered the eggs all over in front of her nest.. kinda funny, like she'd had a little tantrum and 'kicked' 'em around and stomped off to the pool.

So, now she is the Auntie to Diane's babies. fun to watch.
