I asked DH to pose by the tree stump so as to get an idea of size, and this is the biggest of them all, and we have maybe 10 altogether...

**************************and as for my opinion on hatchery birds I think it is the hatchery we should look at, I for one LOVE Murray...I have bought beautiful birds from them for 20 years.
I have never had any issues with any chicks arriving sick or ill, in any weather, even in Mrach in Okanogan...and we thought they were coming April but showed up our fault at the PO March first, well it was still snowing and cold in Tonasket...and I had no electricity, so I put the chicks in a rabbit cage, opened my gas magic chef RV oven, lit it, on pilot, and put tin foil all around the babies cage...think they'd die from fumes ???
They were the most awesome hens, all 50...laying double yolker JUMBO eggs...this is McMurray hatchery PBR's, still the best laying machine for the home ractitioner I have ever seen, and a beautiful black and white bird...AND they did well through the MINUS 10 degree winter....I just got 25 this spring, raised and sold them and 2 of the buyers have called wanting more, I will stand by McMurray in a heartbeat.
But as for other breeds, like Ameraucanas, I have yet to see a "hatchery" that has the grip on these birds and usualy is selling bastardized versions of EEs....and this is very upsetting to those that are working so hard to not only creat a breed, but keep it clean...and when it becomes the least bit popular...some hatchery mass produces this breed all wrong~~~~it is sad, and disheartening.
BUT, for the standard OLD breeds, and for nothing more than health and eggs...and beauty too, I recommend Murray McMurray.

No I am not getting paid to spam McMurray....some people just want a small flock of NICE healthy birds, and Murray does that...I have yet to see them offer "Araucanas" with tails or "Ameraucanas" with wierd colors we know are really bastardized Easter Eaggers...nor have I seen them ever offer any version of Olive Egger....I do not think they are on the designer Lavender everything-splash everything maran-everything lavender, splash, blue araucana and ameracauna everything train.....they just produce nice, purebred OLD varieties ...that said, I have seen ALOT of hatcheries that are trying to sell the most horrid birds off as "purebred" somethings....what can we do about that ???
And has anyone found redroosterfarms ad in CL ?????

What in the heck kind of trees are these? They are gi-normous (to quote my kids).

Actually that is a mature Sitka Spruce, and they are short as conifers go, mature at 100-130 feet, and stumpy, whereas the Doug Fir at maturity can go 300 feet, hard to believe huh ?
Hemlock and Dough Fir can go 3 X as tall, not as wide a butt, but the reason may stem from the fatc that Sitka spruce rule the coast, and take GINORMOUS winds and storm, and a tall spindly tree like a Doug Fir ot Tamarack, or Lodge Pole for example, would go DOWN fast...we saw this on the coast here in the massive wind storm 3 years ago.....

Well when you put it that way, I show my chickens ALL day long! lol Especially to my neighbors, and my mail carrier LOVES to throw them treets from the mail boxes. She says she carriers a bag of goodies specifically for them! lol She even stopped to ask if it was ok!

I thought that was very conciderate of her.

When I was driving down the road and saw that little Polish digging a dirt bath under a rhondebush I knew I must be at your house!!!

Ive been watching for redroosterfarms adds, but havnt seen them. Maby I'm looking in the wrong area...

As for your trees!
love.gif
I absolutely LOVE old growth timber! Some of the trees that are up the hill from my house are emense! I love walking through the woods and just looking up. And up, and up... Hehe

The only hatchery that I have bought from was ideal. While their customer service was killer, they sent me a couple of the wrong breeds... Granted they may have just ran out of one breed and sent another as a replacement, but... I didnt get what I ordered. Plus the quality was poor, and 17 out of 25 chicks arived with pasty butt... Other than that they were healthy.

Speaking of that little turd polish of mine... It took me an hour to catch him at roost... Little brat, every time I thought he was settled, I would get up to him, reach my hand out, then he would kinda growl/bark at me!
gig.gif
When I finally got ahold of him, he squaked and flogged at me for all he was worth! lol So I carried him around for about a half hour. Let Chloe see him, let my 11 YO brother pet him, then put him to bed... The little brat has been refusing to go back into the coop/run at night, and instead roosts on top of the run, and in the branches above the run...

I will say again, as did Tamara and Illia, that the hatcheries have zero business selling birds that they have zero idea of what these birds are even supposed to look like, and should be held illegal, as in false advertising...as in leading the buyer...in any other business, it would be so illegal as to draw jail and fines...you cannot sell something that it is not.
If I buy a hereford calf, do not want an angus showing up on my doorstep, and believe me, most city people would have no idea and believe the calf they had to be a white face, even though it be all black~~~
It is extremely obvious to me and others that these hatcheries selling "Ameraucanas" that are really mutt easter eggers are only after the mighty dollar, and crap like that leads my mind to the point that if they are so interested in the mighty dollar...how did they treat/feed/house/and care for/ these supposide "" Ameraucanas"""??
The truth is that they did not care for their breeding stock, nor the true breeding points of the breed at all, just trying to make a buck off the ignorant masses....If you want specialty stock, buy it from a reputible breeder///buyer beware///and I really think the best way we could ever get this ""Fowlecy"" to stop, is to deal with our feed stores on an idividual basis...I intend to bombard mine with gorgeous, vaccinated chicks, and hope the rest of you all do as well....and one day a guy will see a chicken in a yard and say: That is an Araucana from the Illia line....and another will see a rooster on a fence and say: That is a Maran from the Robin Davis line...and so on>>>>>>> especially Tamara's Splash Cochins I cannot waite to see !!!!!!

I havn't seen the older two girls pick on him in weeks. They are all fine together during the day, they huddle together, dust bathe together. The only thing I can think of is the coop itself... gotta get more roost space and ventilation...
