Cheryl. Thanks for the story.

Us kids were constantly being told to stay out of the building and off this particular persons property... We didn't listen, and one day, BOOM shotgun blast FULL of rock salt...

I wound up being hired on by the older gentleman, and we laughed over the rocksalt filled blast.

These two parts of your story reminded me of a song Randy Travis did........................

Twenty dollars out of mama's purse
Bought us a tank of gas
And some Redman Tobacco
When we were just teenage kids.

Me and my old buddy Leroy
We'd go drivin' around
If there was trouble to be found
Oh, man we dang sure did.

Cuttin' donuts in the fields
So old man Smith would call the cops
He'd come runnin' out with his shotgun
'Cause we were runnin' down his crops

And I reckon he's still wonderin'
Who that was, but that was us.

Now some of these local boys moved on
But we never changed a bit
Never had a lick of sense
Least that's what some folks said.

Then finally we turned old enough
To buy our own beer
Don't remember much about that year
Juct lucky we ain't dead.

Somebody said they saw some boys
With a truck looked just like mine
Tryin' to pull down that old water tank
That sits out on the county line.

And people wonder why it leans
The way it does, that was us.

--- Instrumental ---

Seems like small towns never change
But things get tough when times get hard
They said when he got sick
Old man Smith would a lost that farm.

'Cause he was gettin' way behind
On all his bills
But somebody brought his crops in
From the field.

Yeah, and folks around here
Still wonder who that was.

That was us.

That was us.

That was us.

That was us.

That was us.

Not sure if that was meant for me or not but I'd like everyone to know that I was not trying to put Robin or anyone else down. What I was trying to do is lift humans up and to simply make the point that animals are animals and humans are humans. And if I was trying to put anything down it was the idea that human beings ought to commit mass suicide by running off a cliff like lemings or be gased like cats and dogs just so more animals can have their rights.

And for the record, if folks don't see me on here for awhile it's because I've simply got other priorities or I haven't read anything I feel the need to respond to.

I say feel any way your want. Believe any way or anything you want. Just don't put others down, demean them, or belittle them because they don't see things as you do. And for everybody's sake, whatever you do, do NOT try to force your beliefs on someone else. You have 2 children - suppose someone decided that 1 was enough? Or like in China, where you would not have been allowed to be born because you were a girl.
Quote:
Who says it's hard on the entire family? Ever watch Little House on the Prairie or The Waltons? Sure that's just TV but it was based on the reality at the time. My Mom was one of 9 children and my Dad was one of 15. My Grandpa on my Daddy's side was a coal miner. "Hard" is relative. What is hard to you may very well be a tremendous blessing to someone else.
Quote:
Who says one has to go to college? I never went to college. I had a very successful career in the Navy and never went to college. Anyone who knows anything about the military knows that it didn't make us Millionaires. Was it "hard"? You bet! But there were so many good things that came out of that experience for not only myself but my wife and kids too that I wouldn't trade it for anything. In fact, one of the fruits from that seed is that I now run my own business from much of what the Navy taught me. Although, in the end I must confess that everything I have is nothing more that a consequence of my Life Verse (see below).
Quote:
I am truly sorry that you feel having the best food or clothes or toys, like some of the other kids did, is what life is all about. I'd be willing to bet anything that if you were to talk to some of those other kids who seemed to have everything that you'd find out they'd have given all those toys or fancy food and clothes for the warmth and love that comes with a big family who love each other.

And what is a "big family". I don't know how "big" your family is or was but I am guessing it is bigger than what you think it should be today. Suppose your parents felt the way you do now. It's quite possible that you wouldn't even be here. And look at all the contributions to Society and your family and others that you've made.
Quote:
Sad to you. But I bet not to those 7 little ones and the little baby growing in her mother's womb. Almost every day I encounter some person who by many folks standards come from a background and experience where they would say it was better the person had never been born. And yet today that person is successful and doing more for Society than many of those who supposedly had a good childhood. This is a perfect example of how we cannot let our situations, experiences, and such cause us to create a belief as to how things must be. Because we simply haven't witnessed or experienced the other side and, even more importantly, none of us has a crystal ball where we can see into the future. That Little One who never had "the best food" may grow up to find a way to feed the world. The lack of something may be just the impetus that is needed to motivate them in such a way to to try and prevent the same from happening to anyone else.
Quote:
And not just in "decades past". Unborn baby girls are still killed today in China. All in the name of population control. And I suppose so others can have the best food, nicer clothes, and better toys!
Quote:
No, nobody "forced" China to kill their people. It was a choice. Let's get that straight. It was a pure choice motivated solely and purely by unadulterated selfishness. It was a Communistic Idealism that saw little to no worth in the innocence of a little baby girl and in order to put more people in the workforce to accomplish their Communistic agenda, they chose to populate their country with men and relegate females to a lesser class of people. Women simply aren't as valued as a person or at the very least as much as a man. And that is because somebody decided it should be that way.
Quote:
And I say God Bless her. God bless a woman who wants to have children and hasn't been allowed to. God bless her that she chooses life over death. She may not be able to give her children everything she'd like to but I bet she is giving them everything she can. And what is not received in the way of the best food, better clothes, and fancier toys is I bet made up in love. That mother gave her kids the greatest gift of all - the gift of life.
Quote:
And why is that? Do you know? I don't. Perhaps it is because she doesn't know any better since she's always been treated in China like a second-class citizen? Perhaps it is because she has been taught in American that she is entitled? Perhaps it's just because she can't find a job? Maybe because she's Chinese and doesn't speak good English and some other American holds that against her. Whatever the reason, at least she's not killing her kids and I'd be willing to bet she's trying to do the best she can.
Quote:
Yes, and as someone who is intimately familiar with someone who has chosen to live on the streets and be homeless, I can tell you that in this one case it is their choice. I took them into my home, got them cleaned up, sobered up, into treatment of various sorts, and to the point where they were able to almost be entirely on their own. Then, of their own choice, they decided to go back and live on the streets. In many others it is the same. And in some cases, it is because they know they are entitled and can live that way and have found a way to be comfortable in that situation. In other cases, it is simply because they have not been offered the help they need yet.

I just wonder, where would we all be if we were treated in the way that we often treat others? Where would we be if the majority of others held the same views as we do? That's something I constantly strive to ask myself BEFORE I go telling someone the way it ought to be.

God Bless,

I understand exactly wat you are talking about. My mother and I colunteer at our local food bank, and there are SO many people who just aren't making it. Then there are the imigrants, who live 6 families in one home. Many hispanic families around here do just that, and it is the only way they know. Its sad to see all the kids, and its even more upsetting to see the people who USE the sistem that dont REALLY need it... Those are the people that I really get upset over. For them it is just plain LAZYNESS! But we are not allowed to turn anyone away, when they ask for help. Sharenet "the food bank I volunteer at" has had to put limits on food items that we hand out. There has been an explosion of people all over the place, who NEED help, but wont do it for themselves...

It is very sad.

The elementary school that my little brother goes to, sends four meals worth of food home for the low income students, so they have food over the weekends. This is a new policy for our school district, its nice that they are stepping up to help their students, but if the parents of said children, would just do a little more to help themselves, it MIGHT not be as needed...

I'm glad the schools are trying to help, but it isn't their responsibility, and shouldn't be their priority. Education should be the priority for the schools, not going over the budget to pay for weekends meals at home...

Please nobody think I'm bashing our schools, I'm not. We have a wonderful district, but it shouldn't be their responsibility to feed the students 7 days a week...

The world is a hard place right now, and kids are suffering for it. That is the saddest part. All the kids, who are having to grow up WAY to fast...

I hear you exactly Cheryl !
The other day myy Mom asked me for the second time why we do not go sign up for food stamps, on disability and with digestive disease and so many allergies, I more than qualify...and I do not go to get any food from the food banks.
So far, I am fed, and fed well and nutritionally...even though it costs a small fortune to buy all the special gluten free foods I can eat only, I do not get food stamps.
But I did just go to Monroe again, and every month I go and take eggs, and this time $150 worth of groceries to my son and his girlfriend, and their 2 chicldren.
He is working at microsoft, she at boeing,, thankful they are both employed, but still it is so hard.
My daughter is doing child care, 2 -3yo twin boys, a baby with heart problems, and 2 other families drop their kids off with her as well..so she has anywhere from the 3 babies to 6.
And she (my daughter) is barely keeping her head above water and is considering bankrupcy as she used to be welding...a union worker, the pay is so much better in the male dominated field...So I give her money all the time, too...she is single, no kids...2 years ago she was welding and going to college ...had to quit, still has student loans to repay for a degree she will not have.
College tuition has gone up so much !
Maybe I should get the food stamps and buy stuff for hungry people with the food stamps...oh that would be illegal ?
Hey check out the sprout all the way down my driveway :

Are these edible? yum. I have no clue which ones are edible or not.

Hi everyone! I'm in University Place, WA, (right next to Tacoma) and just studying right now before I build and set up a coop this spring! I'll only have 3 or 4 hens, but am looking for very specific breeds from local folks. My hens will be primarily pets, a source of eggs and I want pretty eggs! I won't be showing or breeding. Hoping to network with local people so I can set up our new coop right!

yes, shaggy manes are edible, they love to grow in sand or rocks like right in your rocked driveway.
It amazes me how strong they are to push up througth the hard rocks.
To harvest, cold water wash and snip off 'root' then peel upwards, the fringes on the top..to remove any sand they may have, and they do get sandy !
An old woman neighbor of mine in North Idaho would put them all in a giant kettle and dump several pounds of butter in...the shrooms being buckets we peeled...and she cooked quickly on her wood cook stove, then added chicken stock, and when hot, like just scalding...hot pack for 20 minutes or pressure can.
Throughout the icy cold minus degreed winter she would call or stop by my cabin and say "hey! Ya wanna come over for shaggies on toast ?" and so we did.
We would pop a can, toast some bread and eat...me never knowing why I would get sick...

bread !
Love shaggies ! Morels, chantrels ! any edible shroom.
Be careful you know what you doing when you pick and harvest.
I do not know about cat food and chickens...I know mine have stolen the dog's and cat's food...if I am not careful to hide it...and they live on.
