I also experienced a funny last evening...I have had all sorts of different bait on rat and mouse traps and so far not much has really worked except chocolate frosting....and that seems to not be working, so tried cheddar cheese, and they ate it off all the mouse and rat traps but 2 had mice, the rest were licked clean!!

So, I got out the ultimate weapon!
The velvetta ! HA! It is so sticky the little bastardos will never get it off the trap without setting it off !

So as dusk fell, with a wad of velvetta and a flash light, I set traps, one by the Guinea pen, up the hill to one in the rabbit area, and so on full circle to 2 mouse traps in the old car...and SNAP!!!!!!

So the dog goes off on a red alert and I see something running in front of me and it is a BIG racoon, dropped the trap in the road and went to peek out from behind a car!
He stood up on his hind legs like a bear...for a minute I thought it was a bear as it was so dark all I could see even with the flash light is eyes glowing...he eventally hauled a** down the road...so now I know who comes to lick my traps clean every night !
He must know how to snap them..then licks them clean.
The 2 traps in the car are the only ones not licked clean and they had 2 mice.
Boy the mice LOVE to nest in the car!
Careful when you open the glove box or a mess of pinkies can fall out on your feet !!!!!

My other favorite is sticking my arm in a big omelene sack to grain my horses and have a mouse run up my arm, on my shoulder and down my back as I was bending over...little dud was trapped in their and freaked me out !!!

DH says his favorite mousie story was waking up to a thump (no not that kind of a thump) a ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk...on and on and so he went to the noise in the bathroom, and there was a mouse in the bath tub, jumping up and sliding back down the side of the tub...

Wow - very resourceful! Maybe I'd better start looking for some salvaged wood, windows, etc. now. Last night I talked to my husbands buddy who has some experience building sheds and decks and is newly retired about helping to build our coop in the spring. He said, "I've never built one before but if you design it I'll work for beer." I'm not sure I can beat a deal like that!

we got a double pane, vinyle, sliding window, with screen...for free. It fit absolutely perfect in the hole of the playhouse now turned hen house. Free is great.

Go to the dump, quite often they have stuff set aside to recycle and give it away free.

So who is the Daddy ?

I have no clue, the eggs could of all been her doing... but 18 eggs is a lot. and many of my hens are visited by different roosters during the day. although according to my BF and parents. the Black jersey giant roo has been really busy lately..... but it could be the brahma roo, or the ameracauna, or so many others.... and since she was sitting out by herself somewhere in the orchard i have no clue.

only time will tell as they mature.... how many breeds have chicks with chipmunk striping? even cross breeds? only one chick was black. i am hoping my BF can tell me if any have leg feathering cos that will narrow down the parentage..... i do not believe the naked neck roo or hen contributed. it sounds like they all have feathered necks....

That just reminded me of many years ago when I lived in a small mobile home. We had mice so I caught one of the wild barn cats from the dairy. all of the sudden when I got up in the am there would be little blood spots in the bath tub. I was puzzled trying to figure it out. Until one night I heard a noise and got up to find the cat in the tub playing with a mouse. Seems she would catch em, play with em in the tub then dispose of em.

Smart Cat ! She knew it could not get away in the tub !

Dang it is cold here...granted, 40 degrees is not as cold as Eastern WA is, but we have the wet damp heavy humidity that makes it feels so 'heavy' and through the bone cold, if you get my drift.
CR: Did you call Dan ?

So, did ya get snow last night ?
How much property do you usually sell/show out there this time of year ?
I bet you hate to show property in the snow !
I just want to stay home, curled up by the heater...wood stove when we get the house built but my little barn is too small for a woodstove.

yeah one of the few smart things I have ever seen a cat do. (hope it's not showing that I am not a cat lover)
It was 33* here last night when we went to bed and then when I got up at 6 (yes I slept in) it had gotten very warm and was 41*.

was I suppoda????

So, I woke up at 12AM this morning to the smell of SKUNK and heard a lot of rumbling and pitter pattering around my Tolbunt pen (it's right up against my room) I was very unhappy, so I got dressed and went outside with a flashlight. . . No skunk in sight, Polish seem to be doing fine.

So, I went back to bed with a terrible smell in my nose. The next morning the smell vanished from my room and moved on over to outside near the trash can. I think the skunk went dumpster diving in there, because it STINKS. Sigh. And last night I know I heard the skunk scuttling about underneath the house.

I haven't had a skunk around here for YEARS, this little snot had better disappear soon. . .
