well, it's definitely windy here. Power went out for a little bit and has been flickering off and on also. It has destroyed what I had built so far of my chicken tractor

I'm not going to be able to get this thing done for quite a while now... I was hoping to finish it sometime this week since I'll be having surgery next Monday and not allowed to lift anything for like 6 weeks... *sigh* ah well, such is life.

I have a lighting store not to far from me that sells hydroponic supplies. I thought about it, but just haven't done enough research on it yet. I need to get with it, and check it out. I have had a great year with the greenhouse. I have had the GH for a number of years now, and it spent most of the time as a quasi garden shed. Last year I finally decided that it was time to make it worth something more than a catchall. Last winter I was able to winter over most all of my geraniums and ferns out in the GH. I did have to add extra protection to the GH when the temps drop well below freezing last winter for a couple of weeks. I put blankets over the roof of the GH, and I had a space heater on a temperature sensitive timer. I was able to keep everything alive out there during the cold spell. (Including a cranky little hummingbird.) The GH is only 6'X8' I know at this point I could use more space than that. I need to build another shelf over the chicken feed and other supplies that I have out there. That should help some on need for more shelf space. I still have awful lot of plants to stuff into a rather small space. And I worry about getting the feed and stuff wet accidentally. I figure that I will need to cover the bench, and make sure that it drains away from the feed containers.

The power was hinting that it could go out, but the last round of dimming lights, managed to nail the satellite TV and it had to reset it self. I missed the final minutes of Lie to Me. Uf Da! During the worst of the rain here big dog was laying out on the patio getting soaking wet. That is a lot of wet dog that was going to come back into the house. It took me bit to get him back into the house and dried off. Then he wanted to go back outside. I finally shut him the garage door so he couldn't get out again tonight. I was about to

him.

We had gusts up to 60 We had to run out and catch all the stuff flying around our yard. Then all the sudden I run to the coop to close the window and BAM part of the roof came flying off

Im waiting for daylight to see the damage I will pots pics. Never lost power I have lived here 15 years and have lost power maybe 3 time ours runs under ground so we are lucky. Rest of town lost power That was some wind storm

We lost power for 7 hours. Had chicks hatch yesterday and more in the bator with some due for lockdown today. Yikes, the generator decided not to start. It started when we tested it but not when we needed it. Brought all the chicks in the house by the woodstove but got ready kiss the incubating eggs goodbye. Then our neighbor came by with a small generator big enough to heat the tack room and run the incubator. Yeah! Then we just sat on the couch in the dark listening to content chicks peeping and cursing our generator but so thankful for the neighbor and we were warm. Never did go to bed since the generator ran out of gas every 2 hrs. All is well this morning and had electricity to make coffee. Much needed. Hope everyone else faired ok.

News flash! When the power went out last evening I still had two eggs that hadn't hatched. I brought one pipped, the other not and placed them in the pile of chicks hoping it would mimmick being under a hen. When the neighbor brought the generator I put them back in the incubator but didn't have much hope since they did get pretty cold and not much humidity. Well, when I took the chicks back to the Tack room this morning, the one that had pipped hatched and the other has pipped! Thanks God for little miracles.

Oh my ! What on earth has caused that ?
I had some PBRs that hatched about 10 years ago that laid on their backs and kicked...an old guy I knew back then called it "crazy chick disease" and they had to be culled...there was only a few in a big clutch of about 15...broody hatched.
I never have figured it out only that it must have been a bad genetics thing, and have never had it happen since, knock on wood !

******************It is nasty, blowing and rainy here...but warm, definetly monsoon...**************************
Pineapple express!!!

I had some chicks from a hatch of purchased eggs do that. It was a great hatch, I think 9 out of 12 but 5 would lift their heads back over thier backs and flip over and they couldn't get up. I gave them a few days to see if they improved because if not they would not be able to eat and I ended up having to put them down. Well after asking around bacause I was worried it was genetic it was suggested by another BYCer that she thought it sounded like wry neck and it is caused by a vitamin B deficiency. If you have Vitamin B drops on hand and that happens you can give them a few drops and they perk right up almost immediately. Don't know for sure if thats what they had since I had already euthanized them, bummer. But it's something to check out.

Really ?
Or is from a lack of B to the hen's feed and so she lays a nutritionally weak egg and the chick developes deformed ?
Huh, will have to read up on that.
The ones I had just laid on their backs kicking...never stood. Well that was years and years ago...

Mine never stood on their own either. I would just right them on their feet and immediately their heads went over their backs and tipped over and didn't get up with out me righting them again. Didn't read up on it though so not sure if it is this wry neck B deficiency or how it happens. It seems it would be from the hen low in B vitamins.
