I'm not sure about Oak Harbor When it snows here which isn't often usually we get few days of a mess then its gone had few years of bad winters and I think this year might be the year

Ive been telling my family all year to get ready for this winter. And the sad thing is, that we may not get that much snow, but even 3 inches will shut my area down. It pretty much boils down to, most people don't know how to drive. And the snow jusy makes it worse. What gets me, is people with 4wheel drive thinking they can drive like normal. I laugh everytime I see someone go in the ditch from being careless.

Right now, I'm waitingon that first snow, so I can go outside, do a little dance and tell my family, "I told you so!"

I love the snow, so peaceful and quiet. I think the last time I saw snow around here in November was in 1996, and if this winter is anything like the winter of 96' then we are all in for a long ride... In 1996 we wound up with 3' of snow at sea level, on the Kitsap Penninsula. lol Makes me glad I have horses again! I'm gonna ride to work in the snow. lol One hour commute to go 6 miles!

We got some snow here too the other night, biter cold now....Okanogan County....it is funny, people still do not remember to slow down for the first snow. Had 3 wrecks within a very short period of time. The year of '96....how funny...I feel like an ole' timer as I remember that year well. We were living in a single wide mobile home...The drifts went over the top of it. We had a 200 yard long driveway....we could not keep it plowed out, eve though DH plowed every 1/2 hour. Finally we went to Twisp for Christmas with my parents, the next day we drove by our driveway because we could not see it....The drifts and the county plow had pushed approximately 10' of snow into our driveway entrance. The driveway itself had some 4-5' of snow. We had to have a big road grader punch through to plow it for us.

It was an Indian Runner duck, and SOOOO good.

We're planning on breeding Cayugas next year. I'm sooo craving black eggs and duck meat.

We shall get together on that then !!
My DH LOVES duck and pheasant, and his Dad has the pheasant Farm...but has sold all his birds off and is retireing...Cayugas are my target...aren't runners thin and more though ?

They're thin, yes. Tough? They were about as tough (sometimes even more tender) than turkey.

We're getting ours from Holderread.

The Runners we ate because all we got from a little group of ducklings were a bunch of drakes and a Rouen female - Loudest duck I've ever known. She also laid eggs like you couldn't imagine.

LOL.....Does she steal things back from you too? Are you missing any chickens? Any cups of sugar? Hey, come live next to me and steal a kid or two, or a cat, or a dog, or some leaves. Let me get back to you on whatelse you can have. Oh, I have a DH I can rent out.

Danielle82, I have not seen you on here before, or I have not noticed....I am in Omak, Reare Feathers is up in Pleasant Valley. Nice to see another Okanoganite person. It has been cold isn't it? Do hens laying decrease as it gets cold? I only got 3 eggs yesterday. I normally get 6.

Yikes!! Sounds like you have the pen pretty secure, though... What breed is Cash?

He's 1/2 Anatolian, 1/2 Border Collie, close to 100lbs. I love to brag on him...it's sad that he's already almost 6 years old...and slowing down...

Patrolling....

Have you ever tried Muscovy? They are supposedly the best meat duck (as far as taste)...I LOVE mine (never eaten one though) but they lay like CRAZY, brood anything--GREAT for hatching goose & duck eggs!), super hardy, friendly, easy going, forage well (eat mice)...

Here are some pics of my Cayugas that I sold...

Oh those look nice !
I have never had ducks, but sure do live in duck country !
I will have to study up on a good pen & housing design for sure !

The muscovies don't quack, either...so they are much quieter than the Cayugas...
