Chickylady, Love the idea of putting the lice dust in with sand and letting them do it themselves! I'm going to try that.
Also, funny note about Cochins, I have Bantams and I keep them indoors over the winter due to the heavy foot feathering and do occasionally let them out when I am down there to keep an eye on them and it is not raining but OMG its so funny when I am in their coop and walking around and one near me will let out a scream. I will look down to see what the problem is and lo and behold I am standing on the foot feathers of one. It is so easy to do. Those dang feathers on the leggs. They are huge. Anybody else with Cochins accidently do that? I used to have Brahmas and really liked them but now that I have Cochins I am in love. I love the big fluffy butts and the short squat bodies. And the leg feathers are way heavier then Brahmas. The Bantams are so bossy and talkative and just adorable. I have always had large fowl before these because I always thought Bantams were useless except as pets. I still think that but Bantam Cochin cuteness, they steal my heart!

and they will stop and let off a big shake like a dog and a giant puff of 'smoke' will float away
...like hey ! Your chickens are smokin' dude!!

I LOVE Cochins, and so many awesome colorations, the brahmas are smaller and not so pretty.
I just heard of someone breeding LF Cochin Birchen, I am looking into that...that has to be gorgeous on a cochin !

I do believe that this will be a much tougher winter than anything we have had in the past 10-15 years. I mean think about it a second... When was the last time ALL of western washington / most of washington, seen snow in NOVEMBER??? My birthday is November 21st, I'm 29, and I can not for the life of me remember snow ever falling on my birthday. Also, think back to 1996... That was the last hard lanina year we had. And this year is suposedly going to be twice as bad as '96. On Bainbridge Island in December of 1996, at seal level we had 2' of snow.
Oh I hope it doesn't get bad as they said on the news this morning...looking at the news now, they are saying much less wind !
The weather guy Don what's his name this morning said gusts to 70 I thought we were heading for another hurricane like 4 years ago!!!!

I have my generator ready, DH is putting wired through the wall to hook up to to run the brooders and incubators...it is supposed to be very windy at Bellingham so it says, so hang on your guys up there !
I believe everyone has power now. But this next incoming storm is gonna knock it out again. The ground is saturated, so root systems are weakened, add high winds to that... And well my peaceful little spot is gonna be a huge mess of downed trees... And that is exactly why most true locals carry an axe and a chain saw with them. You just never know when your gonna need to clear a road...

Brahmas actually come in Silver Laced, Buff Laced, Blue Laced Red, Gold Laced, and gold and silver Partridge just like Cochins do. Also, they are bigger than Cochins - true to type Brahmas should weigh 9 lbs for hens, 12 lbs for cocks. Cochins are only fluffier because of their allowance for more feathering on the shanks. Cochin hens should only be 8 lbs, cocks at 11 lbs. They're also very quiet, docile, and friendly. Oh, and naturally Brahmas are not broody. I think yours is like my Silver Laced Polish - One in a million.

Partly the reason for my surprise at their big moult and sudden dark-backed pencilling, never have seen that before in any Brahmas I have had in all of my years of raising chickens.
But in any event, you are free to your opinion.
I know what I know, and it is based on experience.

Our wind gusts are only supposed to be around 35 but worried about a new coop I'm working on. I'ts been fine because so far its just the floor and four posts and 2 ft off the ground but the other day we got the roof on and still no walls. The corner posts (4x4's) are not in the ground, they are resting on cement blocks. Does anyone think 35 mph wind will catch this coop and knock it over? It's a leanto and the low part of the leanto is against the wind so hoping the wind will just go over top or through it.
