Ogress - Used to, now I don't bother. Used to clip one wing, one feather, both wings. . . Doesn't matter, they still either bounce up 4 feet, then flap once to reach their desired area, or they just plain still fly. . .

Course, though, I'm referring to Araucanas, who can fly over 30 ft distance / 6 ft height.

The way I do it so I don't draw blood is to brace a flashlight pointing upwards and fan the wing out over the light and I can see exactly where the skin begins. I do this at night when they are dopey sleepy and so the job goes much nicer. Then, too, the light works better, huh?

Is anybody interested in some very nice windows CHEAP for coops. I am going to have some that are tinted "privacy glass" yes the mirrored kind. These are RV windows with alum frame. PM me.
I am perparing to insulate my main coop. I think I have enough 11/2" foam to do at least most of the coop. The foam has paneling on one side so I wont have to worry about the chickens tearing the foam up. And it was all free.

I have a few to hold mineral spirits...and they do work great for bird water in the coop to stay above freezing.

This morning when I let my girls out to free range, I peeked in the laying boxes and there it was - our first egg!

I'm 99% positive it was our Dominique who layed it. For the past week, she's been clingy when I'm outside and VERY talkative, which is not normal for any of my hens. Also, she would let me pet her (again, NOT normal) and when I did she would squat and put her bum in the air.
The egg was bigger than I had expected, a medium brown with a few darker brown speckles on one end, the shell was nice and hard, and it was a double yoker.

We got our first egg almost 2 weeks ago, our first egg was also large. She had an egg every day for 6 days, took a 1 day break, then laid a soft-shell. Since then back to her normal egg a day. 2 others are doing the squat, but no eggs yet.
