My EE's are the only birds I have not let out to free-range. They fly all over the run, and perch on anything. They always look for the highest thing. I'm afraid if I let them out, they would be 70' up a doug fir! My fat girls only fly if they have to. I was glad they were able to escape the dog. I'm afraid they may end up as dinner if I clip a wing. I have a portable 85' fence that is only about 4' high. They seem content to stay in there so long as that is where they can find the tasty stuff. It was funny watching them the first time I let them out of the tractor - one flew straight up like a helicopter - about 5 feet, and then came crashing down like a lead balloon. Pretty soon they were all doing it; straight up! Some got at least 6' off the ground, then thud on the ground. After about 15 minutes of doing this, they all stopped and never did it again. I was glad to see they figured out they had to go up and over to get away from the dog!
