When buying seeds, look for the number of days from germination to fruit. The fewer the days the better it is for here.

What kind of peppers do you grow here? I have tried two years in a row now but had horrible harvests... Last year was particularly bad but that was to be expected with how cool it was in western WA over the summer. I'm wondering if I'm trying to plant things that just need too much heat and take too long to grow... Are there some hardy varieties that are better suited to this area?

Not knowing anything about breeding chickens myself Illia, I'm curious what you're planning to achieve by crossing a Marans with your Shamo. What do you hope your end product to be? Something BIG obviously, but what other characteristics will you be looking for by the offspring?

In a good nutshell, I'm looking for a Cornish-type body with decent growth rate on the F1 birds. The females should look like this bird, but bigger and meatier. This bird here is a Thai x Production Red, both those breeds being the lesser of my Shamo x Marans.

The long but naturally large and plentiful muscles and upright position of a Shamo, crossed with the good growth rate and more modernized, short body of the Marans and still some good meat, plus a great outcross turnout, provide for a wide, well muscled, deep breasted bird. The temperament might still need some work with there being Shamo in there, since I'll be raising a bunch of roosters for food, but I'll see how it goes.

Once the chicks hatch and grow out, I'm hoping for at least one barred pullet. That pullet I'll be crossing with another good meat choice, either my best Araucana or one of my Araucana x Marans (Olive Eggers) - Not only will this provide sex-linked F2 chicks that allow for some very colorful, barred males in which the feathers provide quite useful from, but the Araucana in the mix will continue to keep the good chest size, upright posture, and also some quick growth. My Araucanas, though on the small size, are very compact, meaty, and give some great tasting meat at a nice 5 months of age.

All these breeds don't seem like the normal when working with meat birds, but, I plan to eagerly show people what I'm working on once the first chicks hatch, grow, and things move on from there. I'm NO fan of Cornish X birds, and I'm a big fan of naturally growing dual purpose birds, though I do want something a bit more meaty and hardy like Cornish. Both the Shamo and Araucana will add some extreme broodiness and mothering traits, and both of them will also add a lot of "flock protective" skills as well as excellent foraging skills. The Marans will bring a more bulky bird instead of an upright one, and will mellow the other two breeds' temperaments out. Plus, they're not as slow growing as Heritage breeds.

Well really, I have very few "projects" (or maybe it's a lot? I guess it depends on the opinion) But yeah, I think part of it is being a young, jobless, single woman with a lot of addiction/focus on a subject.

MMMM yeah, Western Washington is beyootiful today!

Gotta love the crows. Not only do they warn and deter aerial preds, they play with the ducks. Or tease them, not sure which. Trans-species interactions can be tough to gauge.
Has anyone had success by making their own murder of crows to deter hawks and owls? I don't know how easily fooled they are- crow decoys are expensive and the ones I have seen where you use wire and black cloth don't seem all that convincing.

I just feed my local crows and they hang out and chase the prey birds and starlings away.

We have a murder og crows here, the population has to be over 60. Theres just no way to count them all. They hang around here for a few reasons... First theres the fish hatchery, the ceder mill who also has horses, goats, fruit trees, then there is my place, I have chickens and horses, plus a small orchard. Then other neighbors all put seed out for the wild birds.

We live along a green belt.. it is THE local crow hang out. I swear it sounds like there are HUNDREDS of them. They steal eggs though..

fair enough, if I accidentally leave some out where they can get them! (on top of a hutch) I figgered it was payment for being real Scare Crows. lol!
