I LOVE Butternut squash, but I think my place is usually too cold to grow it. I started mine and put it in the ground the same time I saw people in town put their in, theirs grew abundantly straight off, but mine lingered, doing nothing for a month before they finally grew, then the vines grew like mad! Lots of green melons that froze before they ripened. I've tried 3X. same story each time. My lilacs also bloom about 3 weeks later than the ones in town, and my veggies seem to die off sooner.

You should be able to grow butternut squash, but you may need to start it indoors because of your elevation. It sounds like you have a growing season that is 6 weeks shorter than most of us. So I think that you would need more cold frames and greenhouse. to get the same results as those in lower elevations. That and last summer was just plain miserable as far as trying grow anything.

Also if you can make a quick little hoop tunnel to cover them for a month or 6 weeks at the early end of the growing season. they might not do a lot of growing in there but the roots will be oh so happy and strong enough to support a lot of rapid growth when it gets warm. and here's hoping this will happen this year. Lots of nice green growing weather

Nope not gonna do it and nobody can talk me into it. I hate this swamp land and there ya are tryin to get me to have aminals that need the swamp nope not gonna happen I want things to dry up. I look forward to summer when the lawn turns that golden brown. Reminds me of the wheat fields back home and also means that I don't have to spend time in the cushy seat of the mower with the cruise control on and a cold soda in my hand...... not wiat I didn't mean the part about the mower I guess that aint such a tough job but I need a sun shade over the seat to keep me from melting.

For the hoop tunnel if ya haven't figured this out yet here is an idea I use. I take 10' sticks of 1/2" PVC ( I have found that the grey for elec are a little cheaper than white) push one end in the ground then arch it over the plants and push the othe end in the ground I put these about 3'-4' apart then tie from one to the other at the top and go down to a stake in the ground this will keep them from falling over. Then I lay clear plastic over and secuer it with big spring clamps that way I can take off the clamps and fold the plastic back on sunny daze so as not to burn the plants.

Everything you need you can get at a feed store. One of my 4Hers had a dog attack one of his favorite BR hens and she had a big laceration next to her vent (complete with fat hanging out) as well as some smaller lacerations on her back. I had them keep her in isolation, and flush it out twice a day with diluted betadine solution, and then spray the smaller cuts with blue kote, and use an antibiotic ointment packed into the larger laceration. They also put her on duramycin powder in her water for almost 2 weeks. It took just over a month total, but she is back in with the rest of the flock happy and healthy.

Anybody else use Schreider's Liniment? I put it on everything and everyone. Including me and mine. I have had things heal that looked to be very hopeless with nary an infection every. I don't know what's in it but things heal crazy quick. Well, I do know what's in it, but it must just be the combination that works so good. I get it at the feed store. Used to get it at Del's in Monroe. Please try it on your girl if you can.

Oh Owww... so sorry to hear. I'm hoping you feel better by now. You didn't get a concussion did you?

I shoulda waited to post I guess, when I have been gone for a day and come here, my replies are more often than not very very old. But still, I send you bouquets of feel better wishes.

I think there is something wrong with my PM smiley guy... he keeps waving his arms and calling "Check Your PM's, but it is all the same old messages from a few days ago. None of you have PM'd, have you? Chicks, directions to pick up feed, anything?

Edit: ooops, I did miss one PM back and forth with CL a few times and some others, and bumped one so far down I did not see it!
