It's worth a shot?

Portland is so close to Wa, we should invite her, She has very cool ideas and seems to be at the right addiction level! Probably even an enabler!

She did treat her birds with garlic water once per month and had an herb spray that she sprayed them down with a few times a week. She has used cedar shaving for years with no trouble.

I have used cedar shavings for a brooder. I bought them not knowing that I should use it. I had no problems with the use of the cedar shavings. I think the trick is ventilation. Cedar has a strong odor that I think could overwhelm small chicks. I don't know that I have ever read a first person account that said that their chicks died because of cedar shavings. I have also found that a lot of the "natural" preventions, and cures rarely really work. Things like garlic, cayenne peeper, and DE may help slow down the thing like worms, but they do not cure worms. One still needs to worm their birds with something like Wazzine, and the a follow up with Ivermectin. I would love to do everything natural, but I have lost some of my birds by using the natural methods. So I now use products that actually work. I would use vaccines also, rather than loose my flock.

Lavender really does contain a miticide.

From experience I recommend AGAINST the hollow dog bones. Just last month we found our golden retriever had somehow managed to get it stuck on his lower jaw trying to lick the filling out. we couldn't get it off. somehow he got it past his k-9's and his tongue was stuck under it. he was freaking out. 10PM at night we called our vet at his house and since we did not have the tools and he wouldn't sit still he opened his office and sedated Charlie. he was prepared to use BOLT CUTTERS on it. luckily he was able to pull out extra lip and the tongue and got the bone off. he dated it and added it to his collection of bones he has removed from dog jaws. It was an impressive collection. this is why now we do not use any of those toys with holes other than the Kong, which only a tongue can fit in.

Just a warning.

Can I get the website for this place please..

Her name is Michelle Koeppe and she is in Portland as far as I can tell. look up thepoultypundit.blogspot.com Interesting site!

Most bugs do not like sand because it is abrassive. I just gutted the chicken coop and layered an inch of sand in it. the ammonia was soooo bad with 1ft of built up wet straw over the winter. the minute the sand went down the ammonia was gone. it helps with drainage and gives another thing for the nitrogen to bind to. i then added a new layer of straw and the chickens went wild. i also sprinkled some DE on the sand incase some fly eggs will hatch and it will help kill them.

some nematodes love sand and other root pests will love sand. but for chickens it will help.
