I heard that using medicated is like feeding a baby cold medicine when they aren't sick. But that's just what the lady at the shop told me. I haven't used it and have had no problems.

I would love to go with you to get peaches and apricots this year.

Be careful JB. I heard she just cut a bunch of willow switches too. I'd be covering my bottom if I were you.

CL on the willow cuttings in my lab experiment if you plant the cuttings and invert them (having them completely covered) they will root more vigorously. then you unearth them and plant them normally, the root will reorient themselves but they will be much longer. also if you leave a bud near the cut end it will aid in auxin promotion... or you can also dab on some rooting hormone....

I am so sorry for you CL. You are doing it the hard way for usre...but you have a vision in sight..keep to it. And we are here for you to vent whenever you need to.

Be sure to e-mail us when they are ripe - I can about 24 jars of Elberta's each fall. I usually pay an arm and a leg for two boxes at the local Farmers Market - I'd rather drive over the Mtns and make a nice day getting some from someone I sorta know. Apricots too ... never canned them. Dried or made to Jam. The yummiest I've ever had were from an old abandoned orchard in the hills above San Jose. Never had them that sweet up here ... prettier, yes; but sour!

if you call ahead we can reserve the "jammers" (culls that are bruised, soft, overripe....)

i am not sure what are prices are going to be this year because the peach crop is going to be very short... we had that cold day in november and it killed many trees and we are not sure how much were cold damaged. so beware that anywhere you go prices will be higher... unless we had another 09 cherry disaster... just the trickle affect of oil prices... many pesticides are petrolum based and all farms use diesel equipment and the warehouses too.

MEN!! I bet my girls stop laying eggs for 2 weeks now! they decided they should frame in the inside of my bigger coop/roost so I can put the chicken wire up. ... they decide this needs to be done at 6 pm...when chickens are trying to go to bed. chickens got locked out until after dark, they were not happy. But on the other hand, I cant run out and say no not now because then it will NEVER get done. you know...dont look the gift horse in the mouth

oh well the chickens will get over it and I can make their roost tomorrow. no more launching off the brick to get on the 2x4

I am a first timer with myh Brinsea Octo 20...Absolutely love it. Mine are hatching out right now. We are still learning, I used some of my fresh eggs, I did not buy any at this point. Want to practice on what I have. Very easy to use and very exciting to watch the process. There are quite a few videos on Youtube also...that I found very helpful. Good luck.

Good luck on the internship! I always have a speech prepared to leave a message when it's important. Of course I always flub it up anyway haahah.

he emailed me back letting me know he recieved my information on my (very short) resume.
he even remembered i met him last spring this time when i applied then. i ended up having summer classes and that conflicted with any summer jobs......
so hopefully its a good thing he remembers me and remembers how inquisitive i was about his research and agriculture in general.
organic is not my focus but it has some good methods to be employed.

this is research into organic weed management... currently there are no organic approved herbacides.... so there is a great interest in alternative controls... apparently tree fruit has a very low root density ... at best 1 root per square inch... so competing against many weeds easily stresses the plant.

so tomorrow i will have mom harass GQF because it appears they have lost her order....

i want to get it so i can run a test batch, get better eggs and use my own and then sneak in dewlap toulouse eggs (if i ever find any...)

That sounds good! You must have made a really good impression if he remembers you after a year

Interesting study. There would definitely be a high demand for organic herbacides.
Good luck with the eggs. I keep trying to convince myself I can have ducks and geese but with 10 chickens and a bunch of quail I think I'm outta space in my yard

Well if we do the canning at your house, then we can do the freezer camp at mine. I need to do the actual kill this year. I haven't done that part yet. But with the kill cone (aka a used traffic cone) and a pair of sharp pruning shears, I am going to have to do the deed. Anyone that wants to watch or would like to bring some of their own birds to process, please feel free to come. At this point it looks like we are going to have the freezer camp school on either May 28th, or June 5th. If we want we could do a potluck for lunch.

I'm in! I'll post photos of my roos before then so I will know which ones to keep! Do you ever order extra meaties and sell them once processed? I'm running out of room with all my egg birds! I guess I could put up another fence, and I do have 2 empty tractors. My yard is nothing but mud, so I have stopped using them.

I did last year, but it didn't work out as well as I wanted it to. DH was a bit overwhelmed with 28 birds. We processed over two weekends. This year I am only doing 15 at a time this year. I don't know if I can keep up with anymore at a time. Last year with 28 birds I really couldn't keep up with the waste from that many birds. They got to stinking a bit to much. It was the only time I had the next door neighbor complain about the smell.

Keeping meaties in an area that is mostly mud is not a good thing. The birds tend to lay in front of the feeder most of the time.

They don't move around like real chickens. I think that meat birds are some of the dumbest animals on the face of the earth. I don't have any problems with eating them.

I have them in the garage at this point. I am still hoping that DH will move his motorcycles out of the bike area. That way the meaties will have a bit more room if they want it. I am going to need to build a pen for them. I have one but it is smaller than I would prefer for this year. I will have to see how my first kill goes before I commit myself to raising meaties for others. I can be such a pansy when it comes to stuff like this.

But given how much I like to eat chicken

. I think that I am going to need to suck it up this year.

I am going to order another batch for later this year, I am going to need to to split the order of birds. I would really like to try the hatchery in Idaho this time. I shared an order from Welp's hatchery, but with 5 out of 15 dying in just the first day, I am not going to buy from them again. I would rather have healthy chicks that haven't travel all over the US.

Dang cheese always slipping off. what kind of eggs now? Our fresh eggs are on the end of their hatch. We had a blast. Now I need more eggs to put in and hatch. I could use some of my fresh ones again, but not so sure as they are half bantam and half BR. Not sure how well these will sell. I told DD that we are selling all extras and this is going to help pay for her show chickens (well she and I together). Okay, I am off topic.

Dang Easter Bunny and their dang eggs...whoops...there goes the cheese again.
