well, was out working on chicken pen (cleaning, adding, etc) when hit with hypoglycemic attack. Boy this was a bad one. So i had to come sit down and take a glucose tab and have something to bring sugars up. Well, if I am sitting down....might as well catch up on BYC. Right? Right!

Crimey....I got the shakes.

I'm not a pro by any stretch of the imagination but in my observation of the thousand bantie army that held the farm for a couple of decades, hens stop caring much about what their chicks get up to at about the time they start to exhibit clear secondary sexual characteristics/ at the time the hen gains back sufficient weight to set another clutch of eggs. These were pure feral mutt banties, with a high fraction of game fowl genetics, so take that observatio with a big chunk of salt.

Also, in case you haven't observed this already: evil grammarians are made to diagram my sentences in Hell.

Evil grammarians do indeed grab us all by the vocal cords from time to time here....sometimes the evil Hillbilly grammarians arise forth from their dusty coffins, and grab several of us by the brain stem......it is usually right around Cocktail hour...........................

At this point we are getting a trio. We figured this was a good place to start. I already have 10 laying (large girls) hens and 1 banty roo and 1 banty hen...13 chicks...25 orp eggs to arrive tomorrow to stick in the incubator...yeah, I have gotten a whole lot in a short period of time. All extras (whoever does not sell) by fall will be in the freezer (without DH or DD knowing). They will "magically" have all sold to someone. I will have my 3 or 4 banties, the Seramas, and my big girls for laying....so even there we are talking approx 12 layers/1 big roo; 2 or 3 banty hens/1 banty roo; and trio of seramas. How many does that make? 20 birds going into next winter? I'm nuts aren't I?

I think that all newbies should be warned about chiccken math and the powers of enabling this thread/people havee...my theory is that chickens don't take much room and I can eat them if i need to. So I can have more.

BTW: sorry for typos, still got the shakes and it is taking me a really long/hard time to type these...can't make fingers work corectly just yet.

Did you get tested for your attacks? I have them a lot so I wonder if I should get tested? My dad has full blow diabetes but was a beer drinker for years so he thinks that fried his pancreas.

Have fun with the Seramas! Don't feel bad, we've got more than 50.

do you allow visitors? I know some people do not like visitors to come because of potential contamination/disease. I totally understand. If you are comfortable with visitors...we would love to come and see your set up/birds sometime.

My dad has only in the past few years been diagnosed diabetic and only just recently, has had to go on insulin. I have been tested and at this point I am not diabetic...I just get low blood sugars if I am not careful. I have been as low as 40...did not test this today...but it was probably around that. I am still coming out of it...but I can see better now and I can type better. Milk and Peanut butter spoon and 2 glucose tabs....I usually can tell when it is going to happen and I just eat somehting and I am fine. I must not have been paying attention and this one hit hard and fast. I have made some poor eating decisions here lately and I need to get back to my regular schedule....but I have been told I will need to keep an eye on it....it could change to diabetes.

When I was tested (many years ago actually - probably should do again) you do a fasting blood sugar...they make you drink this nasty syrupy drink and then retest every couple of hours....at least this is the test that I had done.

OMG, leave for a weekend and there were sooooo many pages to catch up.
So Who wants ducklings and who wants eggs. Come & get them. All free if you are from our secret cult.

It was nice to meet a few of the peeps at the show, on saturday.
I promised that I was only going to pick up my bator & leave...well, minus the goose egg that followed me home...O kept my promise.

Thanks Jean, It made my DS and nephew really happy. Never saw such a big egg.

CR, you have a lot of potential in your work. Have you thought of marketing it at fairs and farmers markets or gift shows?
especially specialty shows?
It was too bad they had the auction right in front of your booth. I brought my DH to come meet you but there was no way I could get to you. They blocked off the entire area..
Next time.
Portland was a blast. It was much warmer than Redmond. Sigh.

So I came home all exhausted and with no sensation to my tail. 3 hrs of driving became 4 and then 5. I am not built to sit for that long. Almost weaned me of my ADD.

And what fun would that be?

So at my door was this package. Priority mail...Very light, no holes, no peeps, no quacking.. and did not tick or rattle...
hu.gif

I open it and OMG, it was the sweetest thing anyone has sent me. I love it ....all of it. Thank you CL. & Gary.
Can't decide if duckie should sit on my computer or in my car. So soft and fuzzy.

Thanks.
