The old dog run looks better and better for some temporary hamburg housing; the larger offspring came and helped me put the roof on the chicken coop but I still have to frame the east end, and so far today I have pounded my left thumbnail sideways and cracked it down the middle and then ran a driver bit into the base of the adjacent index finger. All I have to do to make the dog run ready for the Hamburgs is frame in a door end and convert a big plastic bin into a coop- oh, and put hardware cloth all the way around the run because it shares a fence with the coyotes and right now it's just plastic coated yard wire inside woven pasture wire (although the bottom is wired up, too).

So I am resting right now, and daughter-person is getting me some more small dimension lumber to finish the coop and make a door.

The roof for the coop is going to be grey tarp for a while, I suspect; I've got compo roof to use but I need to persuade some helpful circular-saw wielding person to trim up the raggedy end first.

All of this stuff used to be easier to accomplish back when I was forty.

yes -- feed stores tend to call those chicks "ameracaunas", "americanas", and even "aracaunas" --- however they don't conform to the breed standards of Ameraucanas nor Araucanas -- the breeders of those are very protective of their breed names, and get quite huffy when someone claims to have one ... that doesn't exhibit one of the accepted colors, or markings, or conformation, or breeding

the conversations about those can get heated !!!!

actually I am delighted to have Easter Eggers -- that's what I wanted, that's what I got, never mind that the hatchery and feed store had them under the Americana label ...

my only regret is that they were all supposed to be PULLETS ... then one of the prettiest of the bunch wound up learning to crow

I love my ee chickens so much that I got some more to replace the ones I lost from 2 yrs ago

this site amuses me, good info too

Favs can be super skitsy but tend to settle down A TON when they get close to POL. However, I have heard of many a hatchery Fav girl being nasty mean, I have one of those myself. Even when she's not broody if I try to touch her she BITES me.

I have one who is 10 wks old now and she is by far the friendliest and most inquisitive of my 5 babies. She will jump right up in my lap if I sit down on the stump in the run. Sooo cute!
