Drive over the hill and that same 50lb bag of Purina Sunfresh is either $16.99 or $17.99. I don't have issues with it. I use it in the feeders inside my coops because I find the good stuff I buy from Patriot Farms crates far too much dust to use indoors, so that one goes into my run feeders

Yay, our first post! We live in Bellingham, WA and we're in the process of planning and building our first chicken coup / Hen house.

A couple of questions:
1. What type of egg laying hens do you recommend that we could get local within Whatcom or Skagit County?
2. I wouldn't mind raising them from chicks as well, how long do they take to start laying?
3. We probably eat between 4-5 eggs a day, how many hens do we need?
4. Recommendations for a cheap affordable coup plan?

Thank you!!!

1: depends on what your looking for in a chicken.. but female is good.

2: 5-8months depending on breed
3: I get 4 or so a day from 8 hens but some days I get 1 and some days I get 8.... so maybe 10-12 hens unless you got a production breed and they don't live as long.
4: VelvetFog! He builds awesome coop/cages!

Turkey ribbons are:
Champion in class, first, and Grand Champion and the last is Special Award .
So, they won first place, then took champion in their class, then went on to take grand Champion of ALL the poultry in the show, and then got the Special Award.
I was soooooo surprised!!!
Blew me away!!

Nice set of awards, and well deserved from the photos.

I look at them, and read of people showing, and have a tiny glimmer of nostalgia, but on the whole I'd rather be hung by my thumbs than ever exhibit at a fair again, even a little one is so very much work.

I went to the kitsap fair rabbit show got best of breed for my american chinchilla doe and 2nd place for my creme d argent buck. This was my 1st fair show.....I see more in my future. I do a lot of fiber art type crafts so may enter some next year. Also we could had put some of our home grown veggies.

to BYC!

1. Really depends on what you want from your flock. You can find birds for sale on craig's list, or ask here. Be careful of buying birds from someone you don't 'know', especially if you are new to selecting started birds. Chicks from the hatchery, or birds from someone here are the only way I'd go.

2. yup.. 5 to 8 mo

3. Depends on breed. I have about 18 of laying age and I get about a dozen a day. (CCG I'm pretty sure that all 5 of your's are producing. Julie - your's too )

4. I'd look at the coop design link at the very top of this page. Coop's can cost from 5k to 50 bucks -- depending

It was such a nice drive - and I stopped a few places along the way. I did get really pretty eggs and Ms Juno has happily tucked all 9 under her.

Thank you so much Kaneke

Juno says thank you too! And the rest of the flock too! I will post pics when they hatch for sure!

My 19 year old son (one with the disability) just texted me and told me to "control my husband, he is freaking out" which is also his father. Both my kids, both boys are JUST....LIKE.... THEIR...FATHER! If I would have been able to have another child after the last I know I would have had a little girl JUST LIKE ME! Someone normal who loves, and loves horses and chickens and farming and growing. Someone who is happy just because and doesn't lie and deceive and is considerate of other family members and their feelings. No matter how hard I try life is such a female DOG!!! They are 3 peas in a pod. They just need to duke it out for themselves. Leave me out of it! Sorry for the rant. Just tired of this roller coaster ride. I hate roller coasters! They make me puke.

*looks at sig* Hmmm. . . Does Luke need some attention? How about Dozer? I would bet that those boy-children of yours would love it if you spent some time with them.

*sigh*

Went to the Oly Farmer's Market, forgot it was the weekend of Sand in the City and there were tons of tourists with strollers aimed at my ankles. Next week is Harbor Faire, when the tugboats and tugboat races are the big attraction and there's the massive tourist insanity of Labor Day to boot. That's the problem with cleaning up the waterfront: Oly became a tourist town.

Then there's two weeks until Evergreen starts and the town is full of incoming freshmen and their confused (other than TESC grads) or nostalgic (TESC alum) parents. Scary, scary.

So, guess I'll try to go to the Market on Thursday, by bus, I guess.
