I hate all these stupid government officials that are hacking away at education! I'm sure you know as well as I do some serious budget cutting that districts could do from administration!!

On a good note.... My Doctor faxed in my medical release to my boss today!

So I will be starting back to work on Sept 1st! So, my medical coverage will be active again starting either October 15 or November 1st!! (depends on our benefits department and how much they feel like doing their job)

That is Great to hear, you had a hard time this year for sure.

How many days till due, I think you said 2 1/2 along. if at day 17 Id say its ok good luck. And from all Ive learned is maybe yes they are dud's but Id sure still try. Ive had eggs that the air sack was all wrong and friends told me to toss and they hatched just fine.
Good luck

I should have given you more eggs !

crossing fingers for those five, though --- the hen may have listened to the eggs and detected that those 5 chicks didn't survive her temporary abandonment/confusion -- or she MIGHT be wrong -- be sure you sing and cluck to those eggs as you incubate them .. LOL

on the other hand, check with Dawn -- since neither of us (as far as I know) has plans for the chicks HER broody is sitting on -- so those may also wind up going to your friends in Renton ...

Oh darn

Those broody girls are pretty smart. The eggs she tossed probably didn't talk back. But there's always a chance!

No plans for the chicks yet, really more for the relief of our broody; and to stop her from taking her upset out on the rest of the flock! Candy also kept putting eggs in my carton after I had chosen six, so Ms Juno is happily sitting on nine eggs. We'd be happy to share.

good luck to you! dawn

I don't put chips in my boxes. I ordered nesting pads from some online place. They work well to cushion the 'fall' of the egg

I've been using shredded paper in the nest boxes

since we shred all the "stuff with identification" on it anyway, we had lots available -- it's fluffy but won't stick to the feathers, the hens do eat an occasional bit of it but that doesn't seem to impact their digestion (most inks these days are soy based), and for some reason they don't poo in it

it doesn't smell and it won't get moldy either

so my eggs are neat and clean, I never have to wash or scrub them (occasionally pull off some slightly sticky strands, that had the envelope mucilage on them, but they peel off just like posta-notes), and there's enough padding and 'give', that even with three hens in the nest box at once, nothing gets cracked

if I had to change it, it would be easy -- maybe use a dustpan, or just grab it out, since the strands are longer than chip type bedding but don't stick to things or clump up

I think I got the shredded paper idea from you Kaneke. I love it! Much cleaner and fluffier. Although my pullet that started laying just lays in the corner of the coop most of the time on the floor. If anything gets soiled I just grab the whole bunch and it sticks together for the most part. And with my thin shelled egg problem, if one gets broken the paper is actually more absorbent so egg stuff doesn't soak all the way to the bottom. I also cut out 15x15 squares of the type of floor mat that is made of coconut husk. I forgot what it's called.

My nest boxes are 14 x 14 and two feet off the ground. I have a 2x2 in front of the boxes that the girls jump onto and then right into the box. my boxes have a one inch lip on them. when I clean out the shavings I just use my hand to pull everything forward and over the lip into a bucket. then I run my fingers along the lip. takes only seconds

So This eve I was reaching up into the bed of the flat bed truck (aka junkin truck, aka one tonne aka what ever). and all of hte sudden out of nowehre bang BAD BEE pops Da Fat Kid right on da fat belly. So I am Trying my best to squeaze some juice out of now wilted dry plantain and dw goes in to get some sting away. well as she is coming out of the house she sees Quizzle layin front yard lickin he foot and proseed to pull a bad bee head off his foot. seams quincy got stinged on da foot too. DANG BAD BEES !!!!! Not nice like my honeys. They only sting when yaget in theire house (not blame em there) or when ya trap em under yer clothes. I would take 10 honey stings to 1 bad bee them suckers hurt.
