It would be nice if he could just give the answers in his other classes also. Showing work takes way too long!

Seriously, it is an algebra class, he will be writing his work soon enough.

ax^2 + bx + c = 0 then x = ( -b (+-)sqrt(b^2 - 4ac) ) / 2a

I challenge him to do that in his head.

no, the electronic collar you see is NOT operable, we're waiting for the new one to arrive, hoping the USPS doesn't mess it up

OK, last call, I'm listing these boys for free on Craigslist this weekend. They are free to BYC'ers first, and I don't care if you keep them as pets or put them in your freezer.

I have two BLRW cockerels. I had thought they were both splash, but now I'm thinking one may be light blue. They are 16 wks this weekend.

I have four bantam cochins, 2 blue, 1 black and one that looks mixed, mostly black with some birchen looking hackle feathers in gold.........these are 14 wk.

I'm also letting go of my black Ameraucana cockerel I got from CL, I believe he was hatched in Jan/Feb and he was supposed to be a pullet.

I also have a few younger cockerels, who are 6 wks including a BLRW who either splash or light blue, and a Crele Old English Game bantam.

I also have two older Olive Egger hens that are wheatonish in color. One is molting pretty hard. They are 3-4 yrs old so not the greatest layers, but they did lay for me most of the summer. If anyone wants them, I need the room so they are also free to a good home!

PM or Email me if anyone is interested!!!

What I'm worried about is Geometry - I can't see him writing out all those proofs!

25 years ago when I was in college, I took a graduate statistics class. I was a note-taker/reader for a blind friend of mine who is now a professor there (U.C.Davis). I figured that if I had to sit in on the class and read the text, I may as well get the credit for it (and get paid too!). Chris had me read the text-book into a tape recorder and he would play the tapes back at high-speed, so I sounded like Mickey Mouse. The equations were very difficult to read into a tape recorder. One day the instructor wrote one of them on the board, as he did so, he read it out loud for the benefit of Chris. Though he wrote the problem correctly, he forgot to give the power of Y in the following equation, and Chris caught it! I was floored because I thought I had never before even seen the equation until Chris told me that I had read it to him!

My DH is a math savant. A cousin of mine was visiting from Holland about 15 ago, thinking he may want to work at Microsoft. Don gave him a tour of the place. When I came home, Jeroen was sitting at the table with piles of papers of math equations and a calculator. I asked him what was going on, and he said wherever they walked, people would bombard Don with complicated math equations; he'd look at them a few seconds, and give them the answers. He thought for sure that Don must be bluffing, these were complicated equations that would take someone who is good at math 30 minutes, a calculator and lots of paper to solve, yet he had the answer in seconds. Jeroen wrote down a half dozen or so of the questions then asked Don to drive him back to the house and leave him alone. Jeroen was floored, Don had given the correct answers to every single question! He said one time they were walking down the hallway having a conversation, and passed an office where 2 people were arguing over an equation on a white board. Don seemed to ignore them and continued his conversation with Jeroen. Suddenly he stopped, excused himself, ran back to that office, scribbled something on the board and told the people they were both wrong, then went out and continued his conversation with Jeroen as though nothing had happened! Jeroen was too intimidated to apply for a job at Microsoft after that. He is now Head of European Operations for some Australian company that designs water systems for municipalities.

I don't think our son has Don's math abilities, but he's certainly catching on much quicker than I did. What I find really odd is that it takes Alex way too long to answer 7X8, he does not have things memorized for quick access. He will give the correct answer, but it will take him about 10 seconds. He must be able to carry on equations in his head simultaneously though, because if you give him a more complicated equation, and 7X8 is a part of it, it also takes him about 10 seconds to answer. Both Don and Alex liked reading "Born on a Blue Day" because they could relate to the author.
