Joy of Cooking has a recipe called Supreme of Old Hen. I guess that's for layers past their prime.

I assumed they become the tough, dry, jerky-like chunks of chicken in cans of Progresso soup .... likely nobody would buy it if is was called "Old Hen and Wild Rice Soup" and they may not want to call it "Supreme Old Hen and Wild Rice Soup" because they don't want people knowing they are feeding them supremely old hens.

yes, I remember the "real" cocker spaniels .. my grandmother had a mother-and-daughter pair ... Posy and Missy ... they went swimming in the lake with her, every morning; for a ride in the car with her (windows UP, this was the Oregon coast) every afternoon (talking late 40s here, after the gasoline restrictions had been lifted, and up until the early 60s)

I couldn't find a cocker with that sort of personality, when I wanted a dog for my boys to play with, so we wound up with a sheltie/springer/terrier mix (their best guess) from the pound; when Kelly got dognapped (nearly all the dogs in the neighborhood disappeared one day), we then got springers ... who seriously believed they were lap dogs

these days the few cockers I see, seem to have turned into yappy snappy little monsters ... I actually prefer the cockapoos, who appear to have inherited some of the intelligence from the poodle ancestry

looks like the rain may have eased off -- I'm not all that wild about going out to fix the tarp on the run, maybe I'll wait until DH can help out by holding the other end as I dislodge and dump it; or let him sit with the dog while I let the chickens out of the pen .. that darned Roopert tried to clobber me this morning as I added grain to the hanging feed bucket, and sunflower seeds to the hanging small bird feeder

luckily he jumped high enough that he only hit my long cotton skirt -- he is in serious need of some upside-down therapy

serves me right for turning my back to him

next time I'll remember to take some small fallen apples with me; if he gets fresh I'll throw them AT him instead of tossing them in front of him

Ok wish me luck... First test hatch of my Wheaten AM eggs... Cracked two open and there is a definate bullseye, so Im keeping my fingers crossed.

Back in the day, when we (DH & I ) growing up, we all (Both families) raised & showed dogs.
His had weirriemers (sp?) Large Collies, and all sorts of pointers.
We had Dalmations, German Shorthair Pointers, Labs and a few lap dogs.
The most viscious dog of all, pound for pound, was this male Chihuahua, he would snarl & snot & bare teeth & bite the hell out of whatever part of your body he could reach.
I thank the Lord they (Chihuahuas) are SMALL!
Besides that, DH grew up, moved out on his own & they (he & his 1st wife) raised & showed Dobermans.
His best male was named satan..Black & awesome dog, very protective & smart.
But back then (1978 there abouts) everyone was terrified of Dobies, all saying "they would turn on you" then they went right out of popularity, and up sprang Rottweilers.....every other house on the block had Rotts.
Then they have faded, but the staggering amount of pure & mutt Pit Bulls remain..every young "tough guy" has several, staked sadly in their yards...most having pups and not many taken care of.
Not spade or nuetered, entire litters of pups dumped at shelters, and the young generation moving so much, most Pits are dumped as their vagabond owners cannot take the dogs where they move.
Dog Shelters are over whelmed with "pit bulls"
It is sad.

But really, Chihuahuas are ferocious little beasties!!!!!!!!

I contacted Tarpaflex, as this tarp is guarranteed waterproof!
They asked for pictures, so I sent them some...I asked for a new tarp be sent ASAP...and told them a week long monsoon is upon us NOW.
They will get back to me with 24 she said.
No doubt they will charge me for a new tarp to be sent, and refund my CC when they get this defective one back.
No way am I paying to ship this one back, either.
I also had to buy heavy contractor's plastic, to lay over this section of tarp..all in 1 12X12 area.
See what I mean by being able to see if it leaks???????

Well, off to make the tamale pie, complete with a home made salsa of tomatoes and tomitillos...

That little guy is my sister's. Cutest little man ever, never been aggressive, but it is always funny to get photos of me playing with him. He loves playing with fingers.

Oh, and my Icelandics are loose in the front yard, their turn, they were very busy behind the gas grill..and found them to be inhaling a 1' long branch of nice healthy green potato leaves.ate every leaf they could, at least 8 of the birds were in on it...more bastardos!!!!!!!!!
