We have had a BIG racoon visiting in the night, for 3-4 nights now.
We have caught him on the wildview cam...
At the gate out in the Rock's pen, the critter's back was 24"
For three nights~
Last night, at 3 AM, My dingbat now smart Puppie of 1 & 1/2 years of age, went off like the livestock guardian he was bred to be.
And out we went in our under wear~~~~~~
DH with a flash light & 9mm
Me with a flashlight...
It went this way every 15 minutes.
In 2 BIG heavy duty dog crates, we had sectioned out 3 cockerals to GO....
@ in the BIG crate, 1 in the medium crate.
Both crates were right outside the door not 10 feet.
After 6 or 7 torments of the dog low gutteral growl & barking, we got to the point where we just wanted to sleep.
And so told Jack (the 1 & 1/2 year old pup) to SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!
Then I heard the Kelp! Kelp! Kelp!!!!!!!
Of a Chicken in harm's way..isn't it odd they sound like they are saying: HELP HELP HELP!!!!!!!!
Out we ran yet again, I BOLTED OUT>>>>>>>
And found one cockeral had been drug out by a leg & was bloody, but OK and alive, and the other had alot of tail feathers missing......
The BCMarans boy in the samll crate was OK...
We put both crates IN a pen, which has the lovely cutting wire around it, and had to listen to pup dog JACK growling again evey few minutes until 5 AM or so..but NO birds were "taken" or died....we are now on a serious KILL cuz this boer coon, has the taste, and is a serious threat.

We had people to meet & had to cancel due to this rouge coon..so will meet up another time, BYE ALL!

I managed to lose the brand new pound of peanuts somehow today. I Ian is displeased with me, to say the least- or was until I got hom his second-favorite treat food, cooked brown rice. And pulled him a little chickweed, which he approaches with enthusiasm and then disappointment that it's not bedstraw and ignores while I'm standing there although it's always eaten when I come back in a very few minutes.

I'm thinking of setting up a sprouting jar for greens for the chickens this winter- has anyone done this? I used to sprout alfalfa, mustard, and radish seed for salads and the Oly food co-op has those seeds as well as wheat for sprouting- jars take less room than trays and are less likely to be raided by kittens (who I am not yet convinced may have taken the peanuts just to mess with my head). I am going to try to have a place to plant green manure next winter but I realized that would be a good idea far too late to do it now. I also need to get a meal worm set-up going, although that's easier to do in the sense that PetsMart has kits.

Maintaining a frim denial about the existance of winter really doesn't work very well.

So are you "planning " to camp(?) at the fair grounds??
thumbsup.gif

Yep... if you can call a 30' trailer "camping"
lol.png
Hopefully there are still some spots available.

I figure that I have done ALL camping possible:
Ground with no cover.
Ground with cover.
Tent.
Tent trailer.
19 ft Nash trailer
Now we have: 33' 5th wheel....bathroom, hot water. I will never go back.

I figure I am old and fat and I have paid my dues...I can have a bit of comfort. I know, it is probably not really "camping" when I can hook up to power and sewer and cable.
