ARGH!

I had a long post about the new broody from Totalcolour and questions about my plans for moving some of the incubator eggs under her (how, how many, helpful hints for keeping them from cooling too much, et'c) and I guess I dumped it somehow without posting?

Argh.

argh

WAY too tired to rewrite, planning on candling the eggs tomorrow (after I candle the eggs in the smaller incubator and put them on lockdown) and moving eggs out to her in the evening according to the candling results with preference to Sylvia's eggs and then trying to get one egg of each color from Kaneke's eggs.

Hope that the weather is as promised tomorrow, because I need to do some laundry, too.

Anyway, thanks to Totalcolour for delivering Madame Australorp, whose name is under discussion since there was no easy folk or country singer replacement for "Ruby" and that's my younger old dog's name.

Good suggestions. I am not going to name her tonight because I'm too sleepy to think.

OH- forgot to mention: I wanted her sitting on the nest tonight, and couldn't find any of the plastic easter eggs I thought were in the treat cupboard. I finally found a nice eggish piece of pale-green striped quartzite, which she examined for a long while before sitting on it and falling asleep on the nest box. So now I need to work on putting the eggs under her. Any suggestions?

Actually, Malvina would be good, or Odetta- both of them were Artists in Residence for a quarter when I was at TESC. Strong, wise, and nurturing women. Now I must think more. When my brain does the thinking thing.

Julia, just make sure there is enough of a lip on the nest box that she can't inadvertently roll the eggs out, or have them crash to the ground if they get stuck to her feathers

(which is why there are only twelve of my grandchicks, instead of sixteen ....)

I doubt that Dawn or Dana would be awake this time of night (I'm about to turn in, myself) ... but seems to me you just wait until she's nicely asleep, and the nest box is nice and warm, then just slip them under her

might want to warm a blanket or towel, to fold the eggs within, while carrying them from incubator to nest box

OR, you might want to wait until daylight, when you are not as tired and stressed, and can see where you are going without benefit of flashlight

if she's truly broody, she will be in an "altered state" ... though you might want to wear gloves if she gets in a PECK-ISH sort of mood

but this is all theoretical since I have zero experience here, just passing along what I've read others saying
