Yes on the no blue gene part.

The male is a Golden Duckwing, but yes, carries Columbian. Many of those hens do too.

Well, this means that most of the chicks are indeed duckwings w/columbian, the male is indeed so, etc.

Concerning meat birds, how are people's going? I've got my one Shamo x Sussex chick, yes, but I've got about 20-40 chicks for meat purposes right now that are 1/4 Polish, 3/4 Marans believe it or not.
lol.png
My Tolbunt boy adds some fast growth, good vigor, and a LOT of size to his crossbred offspring, as he himself is bigger/meatier than most Polish and certainly not related to most other birds out there. And then of course since my Sussex are not laying yet, on one of their many breaks - The Marans are the other parent. Fast growers, the boys get huge and very meaty, and they're very tough birds. (as in, vigor)

The father to these dozens of chicks is my 1/2 Polish 1/2 Marans boy, (some pages back I posted him, he's a gold laced rooster with a BIG tail, feathered legs, and partial beard and crest) and the mothers are several very large Black Copper Marans.

The chicks are ranging from gold laced, mutt color, mostly black, to a normal black copper color. Half of them are bearded, half have varying size of crests, all are feather legged, and there's no saying on gender yet as their ages range from just over a week old to less than a day old. Got LOADS of em hatching out right now.

In a couple weeks I'll have Olive Eggers hatching out too; We'll see if my Olive Eggers (same Marans moms, two different meaty Araucana dads) or my 1/4 Polish chicks win the contest of who's best. The pullets will be sold though, so hey, if you like the look of a tufted Araucana but love olive eggs, feathered legs, a bigger body, or a tail - I'll be sellin em.

some will be barred, some blue barred, some blue, some black copper, some lemon blue)

Probiotics

Its sand in his gut. Vet gave me 4 days worth of something or another... Cant recall what it is. And wants me to start him on sand clear this evening. Ive had him on pro-bios for the past 5 days, started it when I noticed he had the runs. But the poor boy has it so bad that its nothing but fluids.

I slid down the back-porch steps frequently; the last two times started on Easter Saturday, 2010, and I thought I had fractured my skull and that the sickening crunch when my head hit the siding would be the last thing I ever heard; turned out it was the old LP siding cracking. I grabbed the door frame with my opposite hand and dislocated my thumb and index finger, though. And then again last October when I was going to take care of the steps "next Saturday" and bilateral butt-toboganned down them when I was rushing to see what the cattle were making so much noise about. Which was also the day I finally broke down and put roofing on those stairs.

The back steps are impossible to keep clean because they take all of the weather and the dogs and people coming in from the animal-contact zone use them. It is the Way of the Stump Farmer: fancy metal strips only work on concrete steps, and the glue-on sandpaper sort are for places that don't have 35" of rain in the winter. 20 year guarantee compo shingles may not be pretty, but they work.

The front steps are scrubbed regularly and washed down afterwards but what I need is a roof over the porch, and we've never been able to figure out one that's not too low at the top of the steps for anyone over 5'8".

Even for diabetics, it needs to be sugar or honey in a hot drink for shock: part of traumatic shock is extreme hypoglycemia. I got a BIG lecture about that from my certified dietician RN PhD when I came in with my shamefully complete food diary including every 20 calorie organic gumdrop and was told I was not eating enough, was not eating sufficient protein, fats, AND carbs, and would be better off eating 300-350 calories every three hours five times a day than the way I was eating (400, 350, 400 and a 150 calorie bedtime snack).

For slippery stairs, they sell this super sticky sandpaper type tape at Lowes that you can cut strips off of and glue down to your steps. We did this on our deck stairs that are on the north side of the house because they are so slippery in the wet weather due to mold/algae growing on them. They have a really strong texture that your shoe can actually grip!

Here's a link:

Missed quite a bit in a short period of time. Something caught my eye. What is a duckwing? The chick with the chipmunk markings looks just like Mable did at a few days old. So I was curious about that. I know nothing about chicken genealogy. I just picked the ones I thought I wanted. She was sold to me as an americana (not sure how they spelled it), but I'm pretty sure she's a mutt E/E.

And I'm just fine with that!!

I ordered my coop yesterday! I'm excited and can't wait to move them out, but they still have a few weeks. They will be three weeks old on Wednesday and two of them will fly up on the edge of their box as soon as I remove the screen. I let them run around the kitchen on Saturday. I got a small thing of meal worms and let them scratch at them. I figured it was a good way to get me to clean after I put them back.

They sure liked the treat!

Just got home from taking Abby to the vet again for her xrays. She has an enlarged spleen and a really thick stomach lining. And two area's that could be small masses, but he wasn't 100% sure as they weren't very clear in the x-rays. One was in the small intestines area, the other near her spleen. She also has major arthritis in her spine, which I'm not surprised. One of her back legs is totally atrophy'd from arthritis in her hips & knees which she's had since she was six. He said that it could cause nerve damage eventually. So she is an old lady at 12 1/2 yrs old, and her body is showing it and this was just a wake up call I think to prepare ourselves. He offered to refer us for an Ultrasound to clarify the masses, or to do the Cushings Disease test. Or we can wait a month or so and re-xray, which is what I think we are going to do, and just watch for changes.

Grip tape!! Love that stuff. Same stuff they use on skate boards. I about killed myself at my cousins house. They made us install it on public works projects (I work in construction) to prevent injuries. I'm not sure why it isn't used more on houses. Stairs can be slick and putting it on isn't always ugly. They make different kinds and it is better to have the stuff then a serious injury.

How big is the area you are trying to cover?

7'X12'

Is it a dog kennel ? I have one that I made a regular little roof from 2x4's and tin. It has worked great. Let me know if ya want a couple pics.
