I grew up in CA and never saw it fall till I moved up here at age 15 so every year I still get bit by the excitement of it falling!!!! I can't wait for some on the wet side!!!!

Totally understand!

I was born in Spain and grew up in East County of San Diego and spent most of my time at the beach or the zoo/wild animal park.

The snow is such a novelty it may never wear off!

Ahh yes the San Diego beaches. 60 to 70* water you can actually swim in. Thats what I miss most about So Cal. Also having oranges and Avocados in my backyard. I grew up in the North part of the CO in Escondido, Vista, Ramona areas. You could enjoy the awesome warm beaches then drive to Julian for snow! Best of both worlds. Worked at the WAP as an Animal Keeper in the Care Center for 13 years. Handraising tigers, giraffes, elephants, gorillas etc and numerous hoofstock was a big highlight in my life. But way too hot for me which is why I spent so much of the summer at the beach but paid the price by having to have Basal Cells removed. These days though I'm missing it more and more. Life was so uncomplicated then.

OK, thats enough. I like the snow but not until maybe January and only one or two falls then lets get on with Spring!

Ogress, sorry about your struggles with your kids. I had the same. I was soooo glad when they graduated. You fight tooth and nail to get them graduated. After graduation though there is a new set of issues! But, like it was said before, kids are going to be what they are. You encourage and support, be a good example, and teach them about life whenever and however you can. You just hope it eventually sinks in. It doesn't help though when you feel you are doing it alone. It really helps to have both parents on the same page!
LOL, then you can share the guilt instead of carrying it all yourself.

Did I mention that my cousin had a couple of chickens in my yard yesterday? His lunatic broody Red Star, who was so brainlessly on the brood last summer that she got used to being picked up and carried around like a football and my sister could catch her easily, and a "black and white rooster" which I assume was the tough little DBB who won the fight with a Cooper's Hawk. I assume they came under the pasture gate at the end of the upper lane, but I'm displeased that they were down this far at all- most particularly because the oak over that side of the yard has its first branching about thirty feet off the ground and the Cooper's hawk lives there, but also because it's the only yard I can walk in without looking for dog or chicken poo. Margo came to the door with the hen tucked under her arm and asked if she was one of mine: no, no, never.

I need to fill out my ballot before I get distracted, so it can be mailed today, or put in a drop box, rather.

Hoping the weather holds long enough to get a load of jeans half-way dry on the line; holding firm against putting the laundry rack back up in my bathtub.

How is everyone this fine frosty morning??
We have cold fog, and a bit of ice outside.....brrrrrrrrrr
The building inspecter is due here this morning to do a "final" look at our house so fa, to keep the permit active (otherwise it will expire) and then we can offically "tarp it" for winter.
He knows this, and has agreed to stop by from time to time until spring to keep the permit active.
If we let it expire (no inspections in 6 mo)
Then we'd have to repay all the fees, site inspection included.
So, now we stock pile building materials all winter..tarps everywhere.
Already it looks like a refugee camp here.
All else is well here.

RON!!! I bet you are so egg-cited!!!!!!!!

CR:: BEE careful!
You know it is the least little twist that will hurt you!!

Breathtaking photos Rainwolf! I hope we get to see more. So I'm curious - did you try any of the Kava yourself while you were there?

Yes I did

I sampled before the photos

Its very different and kinda makes your tongue numb but makes you mellow and relaxed

Good. Sounds like your experience wasn't too extreme then. My family has a doctor friend who was sailing around the world with his wife on a sailboat. He would stay in various locations trading medical services for a place to stay, supplies, etc. In one of the villages he tried some of their Kava, but said at some point he had no recollection of getting back to his hut. He's not necessarily a heavy drinker, but he said their Kava was a pretty potent potable!

Looking forward to seeing more photos - sounds like a wonderful trip.

It's really hard to keep track of two kids in different grades with different skills and different problems; I feel as if every way my kids didn't succeed to the full extent of their abilities is because of something I did, or failed to do, or some way in which my limitations became their limitations. There was a lot of stuff we had to deal with together- anyone who hasn't tried to raise children without a driver's license in modern America may underestimate just how complicated that is, how much planning it takes- and sometimes schoolwork got pushed way to the back of the line. They've got BAs, both of them, and jobs, and stable relationships, and they don't hate me or my husband, so that's good, right?

Truth is that there's no way to make your kids succeed if they are not interested in succeeding, and no way to stop them if they are. And the person who figures out a way to unfailingly making young humans desire what is best for them will cure 9/10ths of human misery.

#1 son would do his high school homework with a tutor, and then not hand it in. Every teacher #2 son had sent notes saying he wasn't living up to his potential. At this point, both have found their niches and are doing well. Don't give up hope.

Hi everyone! We live here in Richland and have managed to come up with a roo. Does anyone in the Tri-Cities take roos, for keeps or to dispatch? We've lost enough chickens since we started raising them in April, I can't bring myself to do the dispatching again. We had a gorgeous little girl end up with a crossed beak in May and that was incredibly sad for me. We had a "barnyard massacre" in June, while we were on vacation and bought 4 new babies from a fantastic breeder by Spokane. She threw in a free little guy for my son that was with me begging for one more. It's a ROOSTER! Argh. We live in town, the neighbor (we live on a corner lot) hates us already and the roo isn't helping much. He is a Buff Ameraucana and crows starting around 7:00 to 7:30 and goes for about 10 minutes. He will crow when a stranger comes around the backyard but that's it for him. If he is just for the *shhh* stew pot, that is fine, just please don't tell our kids. This is traumatic for them. Once they figured out that he was a rooster, there were tears from our 14 and 9 year olds. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
