That is absolutely RIDICULOUS...if he does not want to give a discount to 4Hers...that is fine...that his buisiness...but to not show a "SQ" bird because it will not be "used in a real breeding program" is assinign (sp). Tell this person to find a different breeder. How does this breeder think that kids start out? Some start in 4-H some start with just pets. But from 4-H they will start to learn and branch out. Let us know what happens CR....I will gladly send a few bucks to help this young girl get started in her poultry showing project. Make sure to tell this mom to go to a different breeder. There are lots of breeders out there and I bet there are some who would love to sell this girl a SQ bird. Maybe even at a discount.

eta: I used to breed/raise/show French Lop rabbits. I did start going to ABBA shows - I got started in 4-H. Many 4-H poultry shows/barns have APA judges - ours did this year at the fair. Many kids there did have SQ birds...not just PQ.

This really makes me steaming mad to treat some kid this way. GRRRR. Keep us updated. Kudos to the mom.

This is on my tiny kitchen floor making a big mess

She was bathed yesterday & pood herself in the night & got rebathed today............argh!!!!!!!!
As soon as I wash them, they get filthy all over again!!!!!!!!!

There are some birds that, if I decided to offer, I would offer privately to select people because I want them to be used. However, if I put them up on a forum or openly advertise I don't feel it's right to refuse a sale unless I have concerns for the bird's welfare (and I did have to do this once, I had a person interested in birds that I found out had animal abuse/neglect charges on file and wasn't supposed to have animals- I refused to sell to that individual).

There are a lot of 4-h kids that change breeds or projects- that's part of being a kid and exploring different breeds trying to find the 'right one' and trying to find a hobby that they are passionate about and meets their expectations. However, there are plenty of nice birds out there that are competitive. I would be glad to help her find stock that would be suitable and talk further with the mother about care/expectations/goals to find the right birds for them.

Leave the hatched one alone. It will do fine in there.

The one that has pipped....how long has it been pipped? If you open the incubator you could disturb the humidity, drying the pipped chick out...resulting in shrink wrapping. I had one that pipped and I let it go for a good 24 hours (maybe it was longer)...still nothing. By then I had a ton of chicks in the incubator hatched and I needed to open it. The pipped chick was still breathing.

I pulled out all the others. I used a sprayer and dampened down the exposed part of the pipped chick - careful to not drown the poor thing. I must admit I intervened some....I pulled away a tiny bit of shell. This seemed to be all he/she needed and in a few hours the chick hatched the remainder of the way. I did make sure the entire time that the membrane was damp though.

Yes of course, it is very nice!!

HEY does anyone in the Centralia/Chehalis area have a spare couch Julie (pettec63) can crash on over Saturday night??

anyone willing to drive a little further, or carpool home with me, I have a motorhome with two double beds available; no heat in there but good warm sleeping bags and lots of quilts

Can you run an extension cord & a space heater maybe?
Set it on low, 750 watts and use a big heavy duty type extension cord, especially if it is far from the socket to the heater.

I decided not to bring my wee white turkey when I sent in my entry. He's in great condition, but I didn't feel like bathing him.

I am bringing one American. He's not in the best condition, but I'm curious what the judges will think of hm. See you at the show, 12 birds to bathe tomorrow.

Coward!!!

I have to wash all my birds with gavity fed spring water...heated in a pot & use a hudson sprayer pumped up with the bit of tide in it.
LOL This is so much good clean fun!!!!!!!
I am washing the turkey today...I put down a thick bed of straw in his pen so he will be out of the mud (hopefully) and maybe, just maybe, he will stay somewhat clean.
I have another issue...he has drug his wingtips in the mud enough to rub of about 1/2" of feathers, leaving the bare shaft
sad.png

I am planning on clipping the bare shaft off..........and hopefully that is OK, I am hoping it is acceptible as the Toms will drag their wings in strut...and he does !!!

Yes, coward... and a whole lot of crazy busy. Seems shows have fallen on the worst possible weeks this year- first was midterms, tests, projects due, and midterm evals,... this time it's all the final evals, some tests, assignments, etc. School first,.. birds later

Hey, Robin, I e-mail Julie and offered to have her share my room. I am making res. today and asking for two beds in case someone wants a bunk......... haven't heard back on a "Thanks, but no thanks or Yes, thanks" yet.

Otherwise, if someone else finds that they want to stay in town Sat night, possibly Fri, have them find you or Jeanine (cloverleaf) to point me out as I am always lurking around and trying to soak in as much "atmosphere" I can.

Can't wait to see ya's there.

never too many friends, chickens, or $1 -- and may I learn the difference so I don't eat my friends, cherish my $1, or spend my chickens

oh well, I was under the impression you could rent a space there and sell out of your truck?? I went to the website for the yardbirds sale and thats what it said?? hmm... well, not much I can do except try I guess??

you can sell from your truck.. but like CR said..once the auction is done everyone leaves. And YES.. I would say Yardbirds clientele are lookin for a meal! lol! Sale cages at the show = 4H kids looking to start a program, folks looking to broaden the gene pool at home etc. CR.. you probably don't remember that one ol guy looking at my cochins at Yardbirds scratching his head .. wondering what the heck someone would do with a chicken like those? lol! It still makes me laugh inside when I think of it.. anyway.

I can't wait to meet everyone on Saturday.
