Somebody (Grace?) linked to the WSU Small Farms site- they're really good at providing ag econ information. For what you're talking about, I'd also recommend getting in touch with whoever is already selling stuff in your area: one thing with is absolutely true about the kind of specialty products you're talking about is that more vendors in a locality is good for all of them, up to a very high number. People still come from out-of-area to the Oly Farmers Market for garden annual starts, nursery plants, perennials, bulbs, and cut flowers because there are sufficient vendors for there to be a choice among a wide selection; having three butcher shops and two seafood ones has increased sales for all of them.

Most people who are making a living from their small farm have at least one family member working a job with benefits or they are young retirees with a pension and health coverage. If you're trying to sneak up on quitting your day job, you need to have a whole lot of information from people who know your area, your proposed products, and your suppliers. The Extension Service is always the first place to ask.

Thank you!! as for the day job, right now my husband is the one holding down the fort! This would be my day job!....and night job.....and weekend job....

Oh and that was Ultasol that gave the website,, I was just on there! Man there is tons of information!!! It's awesome!! Maybe my husband won't be so tough on me when he sees the fact that WSU is actually trying to help small farmers succeed, and they have information on marketing.... the whole nine yards!!

Very Nice and it's good to know there is some place closer than RR's for me to go late night chicken shopping.

Okay, I can pay nominal fees for beautiful fluffy English Orpington girls that have been hijacked. My Quincy is only a little bit particular..not much though. He is quite the gentleman. But wants his own harem. He told me. Honest!!

Ohhh, I knew there was a bit of a discussion with the club initially concerning our desire to have a potluck but in the end we were welcomed AND were allowed a space. Thanks Rustler for sharing and hope you won't be paying a price for it.

Thanks WFF for letting us be there. It was your show and very nice. I think we all had a lot of fun and were educated as well. By letting BYC in and have a potluck it brought more people to the show to learn and hopefully join the club and start showing! It's a win win!

I think Jules =:~) did a membership to WFF and I plan on sending in mine also. Hopeful that she (pettech) will do an entry next year and it was my first time entering. I have been a chicken show stalker for a couple of years and a BYC'r, tho non-posting, for many years. It was the encouragement of my friends and acquaintances on here that helped me through that gate. I was invited even if I didn't get up the nerve to post yet but chose to post first =:~) then p-a-r-t-y. Now, it seems you can't shut me up! The severe Dyslexia and speech impediment hide the gregarious nature of many. Just saying......

too little time, too little $$$, not enough chickens

I joined WFF also on Saturday. I wanted to use a couple of sale cages. I would love to show, but I really don't have anything worth showing yet. The JG may be worth showing. I am very excited about what is going to hatch here in the next few weeks. I am going to use a 90 gallon aquarium as a brooder for all the chicks. It may work out, because the Silkie chicks will be 2 weeks older than the JGs. I really enjoyed meeting you Birds. I can't remember your name at the moment, but I felt that we have a lot in common. I know that I missed a few of the BYCers, so I hope that I will be able to meet them in Monroe.

I am sure that we can get a BYC banner next time. I think that Monroe is a bit larger. I know that this past spring we were able to have a space for our potluck.

I can so relate to the sentence about dyslexia, I have to work at posting every time. I am so grateful for the spell check program on my computer.

This is one reason some folks want the show moved to Elma--bigger, nicer space...
just sayin'

I would like it to be moved to puyallup, much closer to me

Elma is farther from me. Sometimes, that makes a difference. Chehalis is right off the freeway and a good midway between Portland and Seattle. Another good poitn to remember is that setup has relied on some people who might not be able to help with labor farther away (aka christmas tree laborers courtesy of Mike Dooms)

Welcome Carol! So glad Salina got you posting here! I'm another English Orp girl! Hoping we have a HUGE turnout of them at the Monroe show!!!

I will be bringing my Quincy and maybe one or two of the Girls: Ellen (Ellensburg) or Che' (Chehalis). We decided to name from the towns we drove through this weekend.

I wonder if the Monroe show will get to use the new building or stay in the same one as last year, new building is huge! and bright!

Building rentals are often determined by cost. The new building is probably a lot more expensive to rent, and who knows what stipulations are in the contract. Guess we will find out at the show!

This is going to be something to think about.

I have Horace's hide pinned out and drying as of Sunday. I can't say that I have ever thought of making a hat out of it. If I did make a hat, then at least everyone would know that I must be a BYC person.

Hi Toni!!! I missed you at the show. Maybe we can get you to Monroe again. Kayla seemed to enjoy the show too.

They tried the potluck at a Stevenson show but because a bunch of exhibitors are from WAY out of area they also accepted donations, well, a bunch of people who were walk-throughs may have given donations, but they ate without contributing food and they ran out of food. This is why I signed up early for silverware, because I drive 4.5 hours on Friday to get to the show and I couldn't fit much more in my car if I tried, much less keep it at safe temps until Saturday. It's hard when many people are driving down Friday from quite a distance to show and might not have a place to keep food,a nd the club certainly doesn't. It's a lot of work to organize a show, and a potluck adds to the burden. I'm always grateful that the show comes off so well, sometimes things seem to pull together last minute, but it always works out. I am very grateful to everyone in WFF who helps out.

Me too! I felt like a bum cause I was so concerned about finding a buyer for my birds and getting them moved and packing my truck, that by the time I could help, everything was done!! Not a good thing for a new club member!!!

So I missed Toni again?
Sheeeesh!!!
I was busy cleaning my in box & out box and talking turkey.

Seems my Midget Whites are not midget Whites but are Beltsvill Whites.
Beltsvilles get much bigger than Midgets, but not as big as LF breeds of Turkeys.

Mine are about 5 mo old and hitting 18-19 pounds in Toms.......and Brian Decker raises BW & says these are BW.......so I respect that.
Thanks to Mr Decker, I know what I have.
I love these birds....docile, entertaining & dang they were hatched at the first of July & are now hitting 18 pounds and LOVE GRASS!
I rarely see a turkey at the feeder once allowed to free range.
That is 18 pounds in 5 months people!!!!!!!!!!!!
I butchered a few Cornish today and weather permitting will butcher a few more birds tomorrow.
Hope y'all are OK!!
