as I recall, the big Hawaii thing was PRIMO beer ... Longboard, if I am remembering correctly, is much more recent; DH says the other traditional beer was Maui Lager ... Primo was produced on Oahu

much more Hawaiian is the rum made at the sugar plant, think it is marketed as Hana Bay Rum; also the pineapple wine made up at the winery at Ulupalakua (it's not bad !)

and the really traditional stuff is okolehau ... literally "iron bottom" ... from the pots which produced it

also ... kava .... I'm not touching that stuff !

speaking of Rainier and Olympia beers ... the current production of Rainier beer (made in WISCONSIN of all places! but available at Rite Aid) actually does taste like Rainier always did (maybe they ship the water out there) .. but I fondly remember Rainier Not-So-Light .... and the commercials with the "wild Rainiers"

actually, our community well is probably tapping into the same aquifer as the Olympia "artesian" water ... everyone marvels how sweet and pure it tastes

Probably not, but it's a commonly accepted myth that all the ground water in the lower sound comes from the glaciers on Rainier. In fact, there's a large number of geologically isolated local aquifers, and the Olympia artesian field is on the other side of the McAllister Springs drainage. The local waters can be distinguished by temperature, disolved mineral and particulate profile, and depth.

I miss Green Death, myself, it was a respectable pale ale. And Lucky Billy Goat Bock.

Oh, you read the books. When I lived at home (England) there was a televisions series "Lord Peter Whimsey". I didn't think about the books.

I've seen the series and read the books.

I have never watched the movie (didn't know there was one) but I have read the book probably 100x.

Oh, and since I am on the lap tap and it is a pain:
Congrats to you CR for your "expansion". Hope it all pans out well.

Ahmmmmmmmmmm
reminds me of a story.
When I was a pre teen, we moved to San Jose, CA, dad fresh out of the Air Force, got a job at United Airlines as a jet mech..and he commuted to SF Airport.
This seperated DH & I who grew up together up until this point, and DH a year older, got his Driver's license & still came a courtin' and went horse back riding with me, and from there came the story where I tried to kill him with a horse some of you may have heard...
roll.png

Anyway, I had my horses stabled at a small "ranch" of about 10 acress at the end of our housing tract..holding on before the rush of humanity hit Saratoga & Los Gatos, CA.
On the ranch were a few chickens who no one cared for, including a cock bird of unknown ancestry.
I rode my horse home (right down the tract street) one day & brought him home with me...along with several hens.
We built an aviary in the backyard and he & his girls were there off the patio.
Then I discovered my cock bird was the discussion of all parents in the neighborhood, not due to his crows, but due to the early morning "coffee clatches" and 5 PM "tini times" that my parents had, in which all the mothers would come visit my Mom, and have coffee & gossip after the men went to work, or, at "tini" time, it was all of them coming to have cocktails at 5.
My Mother had named the cock bird "Rose Pierre" and then hens all had names too...and one day, not at school, I saw the women in the morning all gather for coffee & go out on the patio & feed Rose Pierre coffee...they loved him!
They all brought treats for them.
Then at 5 PM, more neighbors came for coktails, and sure enough I spied that they were giving Rose Pierre martinis, made with Vodka, stirred, not shaken, with a twist of lemon zest.........the bird was a drunk!
he could barely walk & everyone was hysterical.
You could hear their wails of laughter for a few blocks.
I was very upset that the adults were laughing at the expense of my beautiful cock bird...
sad.png
so I took him to rehome him.
Darn parents.

great story

One of the lavendar orps just pecked the camera in their coop. Hmmmm, maybe they don't like "big brother" watching.

Danielle: You had the splashes at the fair right? Sorry been awhile and Iforget.
You should see what I have "acquired". A beautiful big black cockerel from Salina and 2 beautiful black pullets from Christina....Orps of course. They are gorgeous. I have 5 10-week old lavendar orps....the cockerels are already as big as a couple of my old layers.

How are your birds? I loved your splashes. Huge birds.

Yes Thats me

I'm hoping to make it to the show in March with a black I have, a brother to the splashes, but I like this black boy better. I want to see how he measures up!
big_smile.png
Are you getting into the lavenders?

I am starting a lavendar project. But I also have some new blacks. They are beautiful. I am actually starting ALL of my projects and I hope to start showing next year. March=Monroe...then Stevenson...and where ever else I can get to.

How interesting! Can you see them in low light? And what kind of camera setup do you have? I've been thinking about getting something...not sure if I should go webcam with wireless or a baby monitor. TIA

our well, as I understand it, is a 300 feet deep one into a gravel bed underlying the Nisqually River; most of the local wells seem to be much shallower than that, but remember we are sitting on top of a heap of glacial till probably more than a hundred feet higher than river level

according to the Culligan man who tested our water, there are no minerals to speak of, in it ... he had to re-test it to make sure, then remarked that our water was better quality than the bottled water they sell, and he was chagrined to find he couldn't peddle us the reverse-osmosis filter that he figured we'd need

no copper in our water (as is typical of much well water near Olympia), no iron, no particulates, no PCBs, no acid, no nothing but water .... and yes, it gets tested once a month ...

beer --- I have become quite fond of the Bowen Island Irish Cream Ale, produced in Vancouver -- we always bring a couple of six-packs back from Whistler ... doubt that it's available around here ... and I always laugh at the Moose Drool, out of Missoula, MT

I don't think anyone reported her, honestly. I think the mods were doing cleanup - the original posts are no longer there when she was doing what many folks have - talk to themselves for a few posts (all in humor.) Of course - that's my opinion and since I'm not a mod here I don't know for sure. But I know for sure that I loved seeing the pictures - especially driving miss ducky
