So, before I go finish dinner, I have a profound story to tell.
I was just out collecting eggs.
But start the story from the beginning..This morning......I was feeding & watering & opening coops this morning...and when I opened the Buckeye coop, there was the sweetest hen~~~~
I had made up my mind that I would take a Java hen and a Buckeye hen & put them in the layer flock so as no Cock birds would be on them, and they would be perfect at the next show~~~
So when I went to feed up this morning, here she pops her head out..and wants to jump in my arms, so I took her, a GORGEOUS Buckeye hen...and walked calmly over as she said wee bits of cooing at me...and I put her in the layer pen.
INSTANT fight with the Barred Rock girls coming over to challenge & the Buck hen kicked a&*
So on went the day.
All day went by~~~~~
And where I started, I was out collected eggs, and when I went in the layer pen...I closed the gate & looked around...no Buck to be seen.
So I called out as I always talk to my birds...."Where is the little red girl?"
And up on my shoulder, she hops..making mr mrrrr noises..clicking her beak...settleing in as if to go to sleep.....and apparently not too happy being there as I can understand.
"But, you have to stay here".. and I put her down.
Then I went in the coop & collected eggs.
Right in the middle of bending over & reaching in to to the nest boxes...I feel her lite on me again...so totally happy to be on Mom....cooing and settling down and feeling safe on my back.........
So I stood up..she fell off but flew again into my arms...and when she did she would not fold her wings in...but held them out and tucked her head under my chin & into my T shirt.
She was hugging me !!
We talked, and I decided she needed to go home after all.
After all, the Buckeye cockerel is not even close to mean or abusive...and despite any show awards, this hen's happiness lies with her family...
So I called DH to get the egg basket..he was amazed I was hugged by a chicken..I actually tried several times to fold her wings in & hold her..but she wanted to fly up & hold me.
I am blessed by this wonderful hen.
So I carried her out, closed the gate, and opened her coop door, and put her back...
At first she wanted not to leave me..then she finally saw it was her coop & she went in.
There is no friendlier breed...Buckeyes & Javas !!!!!!!!!!
This hen can be seen in the photos I just posted, covered after her dust bath...
