I just got my first chickens on Thursday! 25 from Ideal Poultry. They are on my back porch in a brooder and doing great so far! I'm so excited!
Do any of you have a set up where your chickens pay for themselves? If so how do you go about that? I'd really like this hobby not to break the bank lol As opposed to my horse hobby which eats all my money up.

welcome to the thread!! Lots of good info, as for you question, I have been working on that one myself, the problem with us here on the east side is that anyone can own chickens, and so there is a flood on the market of fresh eggs, just look on CL! I think you can make some money here,but, it may take some research and work to find it. That is what I'm doing. Anyway, this is a great place to help with those questions, most everyone is from the west side tho, they have a different market. It is what it is... you just have to keep searching for what works!! But, having chickens is the most fun so it doesn't feel like work!!

I can't find the card of the woman at the Oly Farmer's Market who has meat goat kids, and remembered while I was looking that she usually sells bottle babies (which I so do not have time for, and have therefore not bought) but I'll keep looking in case I find it and will PM you with the number.

I have been doing research. It sounds like to actually make money you have to be in possession of some rare breed or new color. All I'm hoping for at this point is to have my chickens pay for at least part of their food. We shall see. How much of a market do you think there would be for 8 week old pullets? That was one of my ideas, just not sure about the demand and I'm not sure how to find out either. Any thoughts?

Do you want to eat her or do you want to have kids with her. The reason I ask this is a lot of meat goat people get Nubian does and breed them to Boers. The reason I hear is because the nubians have better udders to feed the kids.
I have nubians that are 2 that are looking for a new home.. But they are not to be eaten..
