Turkeys: 50 X 150 feet pen, coop is 20 X 15 feet. (high roosts !)

Cuckoo Marans: coop is 8 X 8 feet and pen is 25 X 15 feet and they are let OUT daily.

Layer flock: coop is 8 x 8 and pen is 25 x 40 feet...................assorted hens, some for show (don't want the cocks taking their back feathers off) some are just for egg layers.

Javas: pen is 20 X 30 feet and coop is 8 x 12 feet
Buckeyes
same as Javas
I have 4 coops, divided into duplixes, and a brooder room, and a hatcher room.
The brooder room has 3 brooder pens, and each consective hatch is moved westward, (and once they have their Vaccines they are let OUT ) and the final pen has a coop door which opens to a 25 x 60 pen run for the babies, and I plant range seed, perment pasture & grasses for them.

Hope this helps !
Thanks.

OK so I guess I kinda have a dumb question. Wouldnt it be easier to have one big coop and divide it into smaller pens ( kinda like stables) within the one larger coop? Each one of the pens having a separate run outside. This way you can house one breed or use for a brooding pen or a breeding pen. And so if you want specific ones to breed you move those hens in with that roo and let those hens go broody or remove just those eggs from that pen into the incubator? Sorry I ask so many questions. You guys are so much more helpful then books

k thanks guys for your help. I am trying to figure out if I want one BIG coop divided into pens or if I want a few smaller coops. Ideally I want about 25 - 30 hens. With maybe 3 or 4 Roos. I do want a few different breeds as well. So many choices... UGH

The size etc will depend on what you want.

If you have space I would build multi coops so you can divide for breeding.
You will want at least....
1 Adult coop
1 Teen coop
and a breeder coop

You might want a rooster pen and/or a meat bird pen

Again if you have space I would build a multi coop.... My favorite one which I can not find the photo of anymore....
a Pole barn type like in this thread
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/539324/my-new-barn-from-3-pens-to-13

in Washington you would need to close off the ends and only have 1 wall open wire for air. Or they would get to wet/cold in the winter.

Or you can make something like this:

Trying to find the one I like :)

ok check out my updated post on the emergency thread.

Warning graphic photos.

I also realized that there might not be any documentation of chickens healing from this and that is one reason why i took the photos, that and they are not as gross as before.
They have healed quite a bit since i first saw them saturday morning. I am back in pullman now.
I have Dad trying to spray them with Vetercyin and protein supplement sprinkled on top of food at 32% crude protein.

Yes, that would be ideal, but that's not usually how it works. Usually folks start off with a small flock of mixed breeds. Then they decide they want a new breed and actually want to breed them, and their first coop isn't big enough and they can't have them in with the mixed breeds. So they build a second coop. Then they need another breed, and need a 3rd coop, and so on. I have my layer flock which is in our original coop, and we have since built 7 more coops, plus 5 grow out/breeding pens......

And now we've really run out of space. But I really really want one more large shed I can divide at least in half for our large Orps!!!! I keep telling DH as soon as the kids are gone, we are selling this place an buying a place with more acreage and a proper BARN!!!! LOL!

So however big you think you need, I'd say go at least 5X bigger!!! But remember, the standard is, 3 sq ft per bird inside the coop, 10 sq ft per bird in the run. If you have huge birds like the English Orps, I'd increase it to 4 sq ft inside/ and as much as you can get outside. Bantams require less space.

. This is what I am thinking.... Tell me your thoughts. I found this plan and I like the idea of having them all in one area. ( I might make the stalls (aka pens) 8x8 but not sure yet. But here is how I see it.... First Stall = Laying hens, Next Stall = Meat birds, Next Stall = Breeding Pen one with Rooster and a few girls, Next Pen = Another Breeding Pen ( different breed maybe) , Next Stall = Brooding Pen for Mama's and babies or for new baby chicks.... Others = room to grow. Each one with a run.

OK sorry I am a bit behind but have to do this before I splode ! ! I had entered Fudge in a Rooster contest. The results are in !! !! !

#3 Standard
Fudge by Chicken Rustler

Breed: Salmon Fav 1 1/2 years.
Personality: Fudge my Salmon Fav is very laid back. Treats his ladies well and he likes to be handled.

YES FUDGE won 3rd out of close to 50 standard roos.

cool!

If you have acres I would build a proper barn... with stalls so you can have each stall as pens. and if you ever get a goat or pig or sheep or horse or or.. you have a stall for em. :D
I would go with the barn as big as you can afford. use for all critters and storage. Make sure to have one room that is critter proof for feed/grain storage. and maybe another room that is insulated for hatching chicks, storage or having a egg fridge and meat freezers in.
