Im completely depressed My dog who had been so good for the last two months and had completely earned my trust for some reason decided to kill and eat one of my pullets. I found her outside chewing on something then saw the pile of feathers all that was left was her head. I could of killed that stupid dog ! I just dont get it she had been so good she would lay their and let them jump on her and she never cared about them iv left them alone together aleast a dozen times and she had never chased or snapped at one before. I feel like its my fault

Bummer! Out of curiosity though, are you sure it was the dog that killed the chicken and she didn't just come upon the body?

Today marks a the completion of what has proven to be a very tough year for me. See it was one year ago today that after 30++ years I gave up smokeless tobacco. This has not been easy and I am still struggling with it.
I have had some pretty tempting times to go back.
Good for you, CR!

We still need to build our run but we have 2 large dog kennels made of chain link that we'll use. I'm still not sure how to bury and secure the hardware cloth around the bottom of it though, because there's a door of chain link that opens too...
The girls are already in their coop though since it has electricity and a brooder lamp inside.
Lay it flay on the ground around the run. That will prevent animals from digging their way in.

What about pests like rats? I'm worried about them getting through the door opening. I was hoping to leave food out (in the covered part of the run) all the time, but can't do that if there's a chance that rats could get in. I will probably set up the chain link kennel this week just so they can be outside unattended a little bit each day, but before long I'll need to ensure that it's very secure. I'll be putting chicken wire over the top of it and then corrugated roofing over that. Then, hardware cloth around the bottom 2-3'; I was thinking if I secured it to the inside of the run and then pulled it under, to the outside, to lay flat on the ground for another 1'? How does that sound? I could even put large cobbles around that for "decoration" and added security. The only problem is the door. There is a gap between the chain link door and the frame.
