We took our kids fishing (Cub Scout event). Both my boys caught very large rainbow trout. Guess what we're having for dinner?

ETA: The smallest fish was 16.5" long! The other one had it's head chopped off before anyone thought to measure.

Just went out to check on my chickens and another chick jumped in the water and drowned.

This hen has the worst luck. She started out with 4 and is down to her last chick. one disappeared and 2 have drowned. I am thinking of tossing rocks in so the other one doesn't drown. I have a little chick watering thing for them it was inside but I brought it out.
I always put marbels in my waterer...when they are tiny tiny babies. Give them about 2 weeks and I take the marbels out.

I am soo sorry for you loosing all those babies.

Well, we have been throwing around the name "Willow Flats Poultry" (for the giant-giant willow tree we have in our back yard and the area we live is considered "the Flats"). whatcha think?
I like it - sounds like a pleasant place to eat eggs from. I live on Rattlesnake Ridge. I can't exactly market mine as "Rattlesnake Eggs". Pretty much anything I pair hen and Rattlesnake does not come out sounding safe.

Such a flipping roller coaster of a day. Our Silver did die. She rallyed for a bit but obviosly had internal injuries or head trauma? BLAH.

My nephew is doing much better. But says he wants another one like her. So might be hunting for one. In the meantime my impulsive brother went by the co-op and bought a black and silverish chick. UGH He has no clued what kind it is. And just ran it right before closing and grabbed it. I told him I just don't know if I want to start over with one chick right now? He said he can take it back but just don't know.

Can you put a chick out with 10 week old pullets?

Quote: Oh yes...in fact the mom who chewed me out...her son is one of them. She says they are "just being kids" and we were kids once and did things like this....ummmm I never did...I know some who did do some drinking...but I did not. I have NEVER drank so much I blacked out or went into a stranger's house. And yes, oldest is 19...on Thursday - the day he went before the judge. Happy B-day. Also one of the other drinking buddies has an older brother - could be him (the older brother is an alcoholic). They were all partying together....my David got so drunk he was biligerent...his buddies left him passed out in the park. When they came back to check up on him he was gone.
He needs new friends. Or at least he needs to see them at your house, under your watchful eye.

The lawnmower has added to my hairpullin' for sure. Could shift when it was cold but once warmed up, the gear you had chosen was the gear you ONLY had. No reverse and I really need reverse. Sheeesh, no help from Sears, or the local fix it shop. $400 for a new tranny or spend way more having the fixit shope do the work .

My girls are annoyed with me I think cause I don't visit much anymore, too dang busy trin' to fix the LM. I've had it 13 years and it's been a lemon since day one.
Anyway, the girls have gotten huge and all 7 girls are roosting on the top roost.

Oh yeah, Sir Stu is not amonst us any longer.
I was out with the girls last week and have been acclimating Jake to the chickens and he was doing really, really good. When the gals saw the end of his tail they would peck it and he would come over and sit next to me. Stu was pestering his tail quite abit and then the other day the rooster got all offensive, pecked Jake pretty good, then jumped up, wings afflapping and claws up. Wrong move. Jake took him out so fast it was unbelievable. He's never has bothered the girls but he's not allowed in the back yard when they are out either. Not taking any chances.
Strange, I miss that dang roo.
I have a 10 yo John Deere tractor that not many people dare drive. I tried to get the HS kids to mow when we are gone, but they freak out when they see the hills and some of the tight turns in our yard because the mower is stuck in "Rabbit" gear. I have no clue what lawnmower parts are called, but for speed, it has a picture of a turtle on one end and the rabbit on the other, and you slide the thing up to the speed you want. It is at the top of the rabbit gear, and if you try and slow it down, it stalls and backfires. It pretty much goes full-speed ahead or not at all. At least our Reverse does work, though that is also full-speed. I'm fine with it, and Alex is pretty good on it too - he finds it more fun than a roller-coaster and just zips up and down the hills "W0000 Hooo" the whle time. The HS kid will only do the orchard as it has no big hills, and his mom called me upset because he was rather freaked out by it.

Sorry about your roo.

I took Blondie and Fritz to Monroe Farm and Feed today. We'll miss them, but I can't keep everyone, and I didn't hatch out enough mixed girls for them. I'll be keeping a couple of their sons. I also took three little Brabanter cockerels, and gave them to some guy who was going to let them run on his acreage. It will be quiet tomorrow morning,
