Eek, didn't think of that. So far I've only acquired birds from trusted owners whom I know from here, or got chicks from the feed store. Good point. Perhaps I'm done shopping. I can't find any birds anymore in our price/age range who would give us different and more interesting eggs than the ones we'll already be getting

How much would one expect to pay for a 13 week pullet at that auction? I might go over there on Saturday just to see if there's any age appropriate pullets I could add to our flock...but I'm cheap and not going to pay $20 for a bird ;)
You won't spend $20 for a 13 week pullet? What are you looking for? a bunch of diseased cross breeds someone is dumping? I will SELL my extra cockerels at an auction but I would not BUY an auction bird if my life depended on it. Cheap is CHEAP and you get what you pay for. You have no way of knowing where that bird came from and WHY. Why take the chance of introducing disease and parasites into your flock. Spend the extra and get good quality stock from a reputable breeder. You will most likely get a guarantee also. You won't get that at an auction. If you do lower your expectations and get an auction bird make sure you quarantine it for 30 days.

Sigh, now I am reminded why I am absent. Hi all, blessings and adios. I'll check back in in the Fall. Have a great Summer!

Today my cat was being nuts! We were all outside and I was sitting in the grass with the chooks. He was watching, highly jealous, from the back porch, and suddenly he came bounding over quickly, right up to all the chooks, and then just stopped and looked at them! I thought he was going to attack one while he was running but apparently he just wanted to see what would happen if he charged them. Nothing did. They all stood up, stared at him, surrounded him, then he laid down and they just stood there challenging him. Totally bizarre. I think he knows now that they are too big for him to eat!
I was worried about at least one of my cats when I first got chickens as he is very predatory and has caught a magpie before! He fortunately leaves them alone. My 16wk old youngsters, who we have handled since they were tiny, are extremely brave around my cats and go right up to them. My cats do a similar thing and lay down around them with their bellies out kinda like they're saying "I'm not afraid of you and I CHOOSE to leave you alone"!!

Sounds like a good place to build a pond !

Seriously, you can go hog head over heels with koi worse than chickens !
We belonged to SF Bay Koi Club, and did the koi shows...yes ya brought your fish to the show !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow! Beautiful fish! You just gave me an AWESOME idea. I was feeling guilty about taking my kid's digging spot away. It was actually pretty nice for them. When I installed it quite a few years ago, I edged the area in flat pavers, and gave them a perfect 8'x8' square digging space. It was dirt, not sand, because my kids never really played in their sand box. They liked dirt. For the past 4 years, they pretty much lived in that area, building mini towns, erupting volcanoes, digging for the middle of the earth, etc. When I asked them if I could use that space for the chickens, their lower lips stuck out, but they agreed.

That said, I have had 2 pond forms sitting in my back yard for quite a few years with intentions of one day installing them. With kids in tow, that just was never going to happen. Maybe I'll have to give them a new digging space... the shape of one (or both) of the pond forms!

No I took the Sulmet out, I didn't think it was helping? This morning she was on her feet and walking a bit-wobbly still though, and eating crumbles if they were put directly in front of her. Three or four steps and she'd fall over. So I moved her out to the mini-coop for the day. Checked on her tonight after we got back from Seattle and she was sleeping - so cute, she had crumbles stuck all over her beak! She's spending the night in the mini-coop.

So this morning I dropped of my cat at the Vet, and they drained TWO POUNDS of fluid out of his abdominal cavity! The ultrasound found swollen lymph nodes. I have the choice of sending the fluid off for analysis; the Vet suspects cancer, but it could also be FIP, which is swelling of the abdominal lining. Since both are fatal, there's really not much I can do for either, and Felix's demeanor hasn't changed at all, he is still the sweet, quiet kitty he's always been. At 12 years old, I figure he's not going to be with us for very much longer anyway. So, we'll cross that rainbow bridge when we get to it.

Its in Enumclaw every Sat people bring eggs chicks chickens, and goats too

That's not very far from me. Question... is this a good place to buy fertilized eggs, and if we get any to hatch, would the chicks be pretty easy to sell? We really want to do a summer project with the kids. I bought a couple of the mini incubators from Chubby Chicken and we are having the kids study the life cycle of a chicken over the summer. Problem is, I can't find anyone who wants chicks, and we don't want to keep them. We're happy with our 3 this year. If we bought fertilized eggs and actually got any to hatch, what is our chance of selling them? And, would we get our money back on the cost of the eggs?

I'm sorry about your kitty. I know this is difficult. When our 15-year-old French Brittany bled out through his nose (we're guessing something burst), it was devastating. He died about 4 years ago, and we have never replaced him. Our 3 chickens are our first pets since he died (not counting the free ... er, not-so-free because we bought a tank for them... gold fish).
