Just thought I would pop in from MI. and thank you guys from Washington for the delicious cherry's normally only buy MI. but looks like we may not have any due to frost this yr.
Our heat spell seems to have passed and today was a beautiful 85% low humidity, felt great!!

Wowza...85 is killer here! Though right now it's 82 and the humidity dropped by 30% from yesterday and today, so even though today is 5 degrees hotter it doesn't feel it at all.

Though his poor little companion who hasn't joined the rest of the flock yet is going to flip her lid if I get rid of her buddy. Oh well...maybe she'll join in all the chicken fun sooner if she doesn't have a buddy.

Are these the ones from that store who was giving them away? Did you end up getting those?

Does anyone know where to get a tiny chicken weathervane locally? Everything I'm seeing online is huge - the size to fit on a building, not a tiny chicken coop. They're also very expensive!

I don't want to spend a lot. This is a whimsical item - definitely not a necessity.

I finally decided I need to respect DHs wishes this year. No more birds. Until spring when I let them do their thing

"Wha?? Where did all these tiny peeping things come from? I had NO idea that's the reason so and so never left the nest boxes"

So no, I didn't get any of those bantam Americaunas from Seattle Farm Supply. Didn't want to drive so far and didn't want to stress anyone out in this heat. The two I'm talking about I got the day after you visited; it was planned for a week before I finally got them! And one of them was a cockeral. Oh well, they were free.

Renee- check Big Lots for the weather vane. They had a big farm section last time I went; lots of super cute decorations with chickens and roosters and farm stuff!

OK so I think I have finally settled on the breed of chicks I want. I know they are not great layers, but with this being my first venture with chickens I wanted some that were hardy and friendly. So I am going with the Cochin. Any one have some Splash, Red Laced, or Silver Laced Cochin female chicks for sale? I found some at CackleHatchery.com but would I have to get 5 of each breed and they are straight run only. So if I can find some local I would rather do that. Thanks!

The coop temp is 94° F. And, that is with the side roof propped open all day. I hope it cools off before dusk.

The run is 80° F with a box fan blowing through. They seem fine. They have ice water and they've been hanging out in front of the fan most of the afternoon once they got over the fear of it.

A difference I noticed between Western Washington and Eastern Washington.... last week while we were at Lake Chelan, the days were hot, but the evenings were very chilly. As soon as the sun went down, everyone was sitting around saying how c-c-c-old they were.

Here in W. Washington, when we get hot days like this one, it doesn't seem to cool off as much in the evening. If the coop doesn't cool off, that could be a problem. I have a very small coop and no way to hang a fan. I can't leave the roof propped open because of predators.
