It's kind of nice to know that I am not the only one to do this recently. Bleach helped a lot.

Hahaha! I used Simple Green as I love the smell! I wish I would have taken them out back and buried them instead of putting them in a grocery bag in my big garbage as that smell is gonna be stuck in there for weeks. I guess I'm gonna have to hose it out Thurs after the garbage is picked up!

Large - they are really nice too. I am surprised at how gentle they are. Make nice dark speckled eggs too.

Karen practically hand raises her birds....last I talked to her she even had some in the bath.

Is there a process to freeze tomatoes? I've never heard of frozen tomatoes! Do you have to peel them or anything? Do you have to freeze them like berries (spread out on a tray until frozen, then bagged)?

My Mom places them on a cookie sheet in the freezer.
Once frozen she bags them up.
When she wants them in soup or stews, she just drops them in boiling water, and soon the skin "slips' off, remove from the water with a seive-type-spoon, peel the skin easily and drop the tomatoe in the stew pot.
Easy to peel them this way for soup, stew, juice, whatever, as the tom is still frozen, skin peel easily.

Bwahahaha! Chicken math...yup, you've got it too! LOL Wondering, how big is your feeder and waterer for your 5 girls? I have noticed that with my 14 (I'm new too, mine are 16ish weeks old) that some get chased away. I solved this by hanging a smaller feeder and having another waterer on the other side of the run. That way the lower pecking order chickens always have access to food and water, regardless of who is around to chase them away. It's working great so far and even my newbies have constant access to one of the feeders and waterers.

The feeder is a 12 pound hanging feeder and they are also given fresh grass, dandelion greens, plus a few handfuls of BOSS, corn, or bird food in the afternoon. Slim doesn't seem to be getting smaller but she looks smaller in comparison to the others. As if she has stopped growing at the same rate.

I have a 3 gallon bucket with nipples in the coop, a gerbil waterer in the run (they love it for some reason) and there is usually a shallow 'pool' that they prefer to drink out of. The dirtier the better. lol

I make sure that food is distributed around the run - I probably put too much out - to make sure everybody can find food and eat it in peace. The run is 6' x 10', again I didn't want the size of the run to stress the chickens.

So I am still interested in finding out if this is normal behavior or signs that something is not right. If I can fix it I definitely want to do that.

I'm in Sequim, the lavender capital of the country. What we don't advertise is that we are also the dandelion capital of the country.

I once mistook a field of dandelions for a field of giant alliums. lol

Okay I will get the crate and what ever boxes I can find. I am very happy that Thursday will work for you. I am hoping to pick up Mamawolf at the Sumner Train Station at 8:17 am on Thursday morning. I still have room for one or two other people if they would like to ride down and back. We could all meet up at the Train Station. I am hoping to meet up with the Rustler for at least a moment or two also. I need to get a couple of fans from him.

Okay I will admit to being squeamish and girly girl about some things. I am not sure why I wear gloves when processing my own birds, but I don't have any problems with cleaning out a store bought bird. (It's probably the amount of warm guts, as opposed to cold leftover bits.)

DH has some super thick latex gloves that work fairly well. I still have to watch things and they don't tend to last very long with my long acrylic nails. I think I am going to get some Nitrile gloves for this weekend. They are a bit tougher.

We will have to be very careful with the very very sharp knives no matter what.

Make sure you with hold feed from all you are going to process, for at least 8 hrs or you end up with full crops & poo squirts...yucky.
I also use a hemostat to pull the windpipe out, and a needle nose pliers to pinch off the bile duct at the liver, and then cut it off, so bile does not quirt all over.......

I still have this idea that someday, someday, I will stick my hand in there & something will grab it...............weird huh ?

Hey Washingtonians!

This is my first year with chickens and I'm grateful for this website and all of the information available. I have five pullets ( 2 BOs, a Partridge Rock, an Australorp and an EE) who have been together since chicks. (They are all four months old.) They all got along well until about 3 weeks ago.

One of the BOs began to look smaller in comparison to the other ladies, noticeably smaller than her sister BO. Recently the other four pullets have decided to ostracize "Slim". She is chased away from food, water, dust baths, etc. Often she is hanging out in the coop while the others are out in the run.

I realize that it could be a result of the pecking order but tonight I looked into the coop and Slim was at one end of the roost and the other four were nestled together at the other end.

Slim appears to be fine - no mites or lice. Comb and eyes look good. She's eating and drinking although I haven't been able to figure out how much food and water she is taking in. When I can sit in the run I hand feed her and make sure food and treats are distributed around the run so that she has a chance to eat.

Is this normal? It seems strange to me but this is my first chicken family. Not surprisingly I am not having much luck finding anything on this topic. Any tips? Ignore it? Isolate Slim? Get more chickens? (Oh no! Not that!

)

I've noticed something really weird/gross over the past few month with my Belgians. If they find some dog poo in the yard, they will eat it like it's the only edible thing they've seen for days. They are provided with food, (tasty) treats, and clean water constantly but apparently dog poo is irresistible. Is it the nutrient content? Are my Belgians just crazy?

I have often said, you only need to feed your cat.
After that, the dog will get in the cat box to eat the "almond rocas"
Then the chickens will eat the dog's "land mines" and the whole world is happy !
