Good make sure to leave the coops UN-locked and leave the coop light on so I can see what I wanna steal. Rumor has it I will be in your local area from Thursday to Sunday

Shyla, so sorry! I have no idea what could have caused that either. Sounds strange. Do you have other animals that could have gotten in? Or, maybe they piled on top of her?
.........................................

Well, we just had a close call. I was catching up on posts and chatting with DH about our trip. The girls were free-ranging. I heard them start clucking - told DH to come with me because that wasn't a good sound. We ran out. That large (but skinny) stray male cat was on my patio about 5 feet away from the panicked pullets.

I want that cat gone!!! It has been terrorizing the animals in the neighborhood for close to a year. I hate it when people get an animal and just abandon it. It belonged to some people who rented a house down the road - and when they moved, they didn't want it, so they left it behind. The thing is getting so skinny, but I'm not about to feed it because I don't want it to have a reason to come into my yard. The girls attract it enough, as it is.
If you can catch him in a live trap.. I can take him and find a place for him :) Just message me.

So sorry you had to cull one! I honestly cannot imagine doing it yet with any of my current flock. May I ask how you did it? I keep wondering what the easiest and fastest way to cull a bird is. So many things pop in my head and I have no idea what I'd do in a pinch if someone got really sick or injured and needed to go.
I watched several YouTube films and researched "humane" ways to do it. A lot of them used the upside down cones and I used a method (since I don't have a cone set up) where you lay them on their back on your lap with their head away from you tilted down. You then stretch the neck out and down and tilt it slightly to the side. I found the jugular just below the ear pads and, after petting and saying a prayer, do a quick slice trying not to cut the windpipe. He barely flinched at the cut and bled out. Unfortunately, I didn't have a great knife and had to eventually cut deeper. I cried since he didn't go as quick as I was hoping (wuss, I know). This was only the 2nd one I have done. I think I'm going to find a couple scalpels to keep around for this as they are easier to control. My first was a hen I had to put down as she was eggbound and was not doing well and it went a lot better with her. They do still try to flop around a bit as they go, but just hold them snug between your knees.

What kind was he?
He was a huge Barred Rock. I got him from a lady near me when he was 2m old. I believe he was hatchery lines but was beautiful. He was very skittish from the beginning.
I hate keeping my birds penned up. I like my animals to have freedom. Oh, well, until we do something about that coyote, it will just have to be that way!

On a positive note, my DH left the window open last night - on the side of the house facing the pen. I woke up early because it sounded like the roosters were on my patio! I went outside to watch them for a few minutes, and the peachick came out of the bushes! woohoo! now if I could only catch the bugger. Even with clipped wings, the little guy can run! And the bushes are a thicket. I'll get him back in the pen someday! At least I know he's safe.

You're not a wuss at all. I'm very sorry that you had to do it, but I understand the need. At least you know how to do it humanely.

I'm not fond of hatchery barred rocks. My experience with them is they aren't well bred in temperament.

I'd got 6 last year in July. They grew into some mean things, always bullying the others in a gang (one wasn't in on it). I tried isolation several times to get them to be nice. 3 of them learned their lesson. Two never did learn. I'd let them out and immediately they'd attack their favorite victims. Ended up having to put them in the freezer at 8 months.

They have been good layers. I can't fault that. The one who didn't join in the bullying has always been one of the sweetest birds and even my husband can just pick her up.
