Totally!!! I sure am in love with my GLW, my Buff Orps, and all 4 of my EEs. Our Wellie isn't bad either, but she's dull and boring with no personality. At least she's a good forager!
My Wellie is a B*#ch! And has no real personality either. She is hatchery stock too. I have found so far, that breeder stock bird are more of everything thay are supposed to be.( And that is a good thing.) At least those that breed quality birds anyway.

I am staying away from the production birds because their laying span is so much shorter than other birds. They lay really well for two years, then they can just almost quit. I was told they can get reproductive issues easily too. Mine did. Had to put her down.

She was my favorite! THey are very friendly though. Which is why I have one black sexlink at the moment. But hopefully in the next year or two my flock will consist of Favs and EE's. I love them! Oh and then there is the silkie pen. Can't wait to hatch out some more of those cute little buggers next spring!

Is there a withholding period to eat eggs that have been layed by a pullet who has been eating Purina Medicated Start and Grow?

My almost-19-week old RIR laid her first egg, and she's still on the medicated feed. I'll switch it out tomorrow - but I need to know if the egg is safe to eat. Thanks!

Mine were also on some medicated pig starter (don't ask), so I waited a week before eating the eggs, just in case. It was torture, I assure you.

I am wondering if anyone raises ,meal worms. are they delicious? Just kidding. I am wondering if the beetles escape a lot. The one day that I watched the news this year, there was a segment on a gal that raises them in a small, plastic, rolling cabinet. Many articles referred to the lid on the container. The rolling little dresser had, I am guesstimating, 1/4" gap for clearance.

Will the beetles crawl out?
I raised them and will start again this weekend. If you get a container with a lid, cut out an air hole in the top for ventilation, they won't get out. They can't climb up the sides of the plastic containers. I will try to take pics of my containers and post them.

See I guess what I'm having a hard time deciding is if I want a bunch of mediocre laying GORGEOUS birds running around the backyard, or if I want to only feed them if they're giving us an excellent amount of eggs; so far I haven't found a truly pretty bird I want to have around, that also lays a lot of eggs. I don't like the look of RIRs or most of the other production breeds. Can you guys recommend birds that are pleasing to the eye and lay at least 70-80% of the time?

No need to.

Agreed. Especially since you're going to change their feed today. I did the same. We got a couple eggs while still on medicated starter and we just ate them, but switched over to non-medicated as soon as we could. We may even still have some very very diluted medicated stuff mixed in with the 50lb bag of unmedicated stuff I poured in there, but I mixed the tiny amount into the new feed well. I can't stand waste! Gorgeous egg too! It will be very tasty ;)

Dave - that's what I was thinking. I have 4 now among my 12 girls; thinking I'll get more next year!

All the EEs I've had take longer to lay but then have been very reliable layers. They also come in lots of cool colors, especially if you find someone who breeds their own mixes. I had one from Chickielady for a while that was Ameraucana shaped but with that iridescent Black Copper Marans coloring, just stunning! The only reason I traded her back was because I wanted an Olive Egger.
