OK, I know this is gross, but I'm looking for experienced opinions. My almost-five-month-old Leghorn pullets aren't laying yet, but I just saw one of them poop out some orange goo that looks like an egg yolk. Is that what it is? Or is this just standard chicken poop? Thanks, guys!

Normal poo.

I used the clear paneling for the roof on my run (it is really lightweight, which was nice when I thought I could keep my set-up portable), but quickly realized it caused something like a greenhouse effect and didn't provide any shade for the chooks, so I gave it a couple layers of spray paint to make it opaque. Might be nice for the extra light in the winter, but I didn't think it was worth baking them in the summer...if I were doing it again I would go with a solid color or the smokey one. In my case...it stayed clear for about a week :p.

Mine will be on my pen, which will be located completely under my deck. And during the summer, the enormous big leaf maple next door blocks the evening sun. I want the clear plastic to let as much light in as possible. I will have to go by the store and ask what the difference is between the two products.

Then I met JennS and sold her some BLRW hatching eggs!!

Came home, dropped off all the babies and got them set up, then had to drive BACK to Carnation to pick the girls up after their sports practices!!!!

Now I'm recovering from all that driving around before I make dinner!

Hope everyone enjoyed the sunshine today!!!!

Thank you so much for meeting me! All the eggs went in the incubator as soon as I got home. It's going to be hard to wait three weeks!!!

Nerve test went well and wasn't horrible...at least it was pretty much a breeze compared to 3 natural childbirths at home, LOL!!! We ate dinner at Baja Fresh and are now waiting for The Hunger Games to start in the $3.50 theater :) talk to y'all later!

Hmm, found this linked from a BYC thread on installing PALruf: http://www.buildeazy.com/roof.html

Here is the pertinent part: "Pvc and polycarbonate sheet roofing come in a variety of profiles, sizes, and colors. Quality and prices vary immensely. The most common profile is corrugated. Quality varies enormously from cheaper pvc sheets up to lifetime guaranteed polycarbonate sheets and the price varies accordingly. Guarantees range from zero to lifetime. Sometimes the cheapest is not the most cost effective."

I think the PALruf said 5 years? I think I would rather spend the extra $30 on my roof and not have to replace it in 5 years.

I'm glad it wasn't horrible! And I can't imagine 3 natural childbirths at home. LOL One of the moms in my mom & baby group went natural at home, and it took 3 days. *boggle* I would have given up way before she did!

Quote: I used the clear panel to cover the run as well. I choose the more expensive brand. I think it was $32 a panel. Got it at HD. I think it is 7ft long and if memory serves it was 28 inches wide. I drilled holes in it, and zip tied it to the top of the dog run. It's been there now about 9 years. Does get a little green after a few years so I clean it about every 2 years. The zip ties started failing a couple years ago, so I cut them all off and took it down, spread it out on the lawn and really scrubbed it with soap/windex etc. Came out looking like new. The only damage is when a tree fell on it- poked a little hole in it. I repaired it with a piece of packing tape. I'm not sure, but I think the were PVC or Polycarbonate. I do know they were not fiberglass. I choose them because they were 7 ft not 8 ft. The dog run is 6 ft, and I just wanted a little overhang; and I really did not want to try and cut them.

You are such a softie!!!! LOL! I'm sure I can find some! Let me check my list and see what I have tomorrow. I think Emily wanted to hatch some more bantam cochins from another pen!

And I will see what else I can add to them!!!!

My poor Betty was lost after you took her babies! she kept going in & out of the barn and along the fence looking for them
No more then eight eggs!!!!!!

I've been looking at clear corrugated panels. Dunn Lumber carries a cheaper panel made from PVC, which costs $13.01 per 8' sheet. Is PVC a bad choice? I worry about chemicals from the roof in the runoff contaminating the soil around the pen and finding its way into the eggs. Am I being paranoid? Here is the manufacturer: http://www.palram.com/palruf

I called the ReStore, Second Use, and Earthwise, and nobody has any corrugated plastic roofing in stock.

Jennifer
