Farmin' Momma, I'm so sorry. Oh, wow. I'm lost for words. Massive inter-web hug.

Does anyone happen to know if it's legal to shoot a dog who is attacking my own animal on my own property? Because if so, I plan to keep my gun on top of the refrigerator in case of any incidents.
Well first it MAY not be legal for your local area especially if you live in city. But there is a process called SSS Shoot Shovel and SHUT UP !!! At my standard procedure is I warn the dog owner, Then I paintball the dog and the next step is a lead injection and dirt nap. By the way I may not always wait for the dog to go after my animals. See any thing or one who crosses the fence line is trespassing and will be dealt with depending on my mood that day.

Try curtains. You'd be amazed at how much they help. I had girls that would not go into any of the five nextboxes because someone else was in one of the boxes - so they'd just yell at the other to get out.

Now that I have curtains on the nest boxes - there will be multiple birds hiding in their own box.

You may also want to add more dark hidey-holes for your birds to go in. I also put curtains around an old recycle bin - stuffed in a corner of the yard where I know to check. I get at least an egg a day in that nestbox.

PS - I got really cute chicken curtains at the local Value Village for $5 for three sets! And then I got the spring-loaded curtain rods so I can move the curtains in and out - wash, etc. at Fred Meyers - they were about $5 per rod.

This sounds like a great idea but I'm having a bit of trouble picturing it. Is there anyway you can post some pics of your set up for me? I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your help! I really like the idea of creating some hidey holes in the yard, I hadn't thought of that!

Well we have been devistated with a large scale attack on my chickens

. This morning my SIL and I went out to do rounds and found feathers, blood and body parts every where
hit.gif
. I am missing about 11 hens, 5 of which were just begining to check out nest boxes to begin laying. I can't even really think strait right now.

I am not sure what it was that did this, normaly if it is a cyote there are only feathers and I have been taking my dogs out every day to mark around the property. I have not seen nor heard any signs of cyotes lately, but have been noticeing two new cats and the neighbors dogs have now been run off my property 3 times in the last week. I warned this neighbor several times that her dogs can not be on my property and the last time I told her that I would send both my dogs out after her's. So the other day we were out an her dogs came on my property again
somad.gif
so I sent the boys out and they were happy to ablige. My boys ran after her's and cought them just before they got off the front property, neighbor was even standing out on the street. I WALKED out to find her yelling at my dogs because the good boys that they are had hers pinded to the ground by their necks, just holding them there. I reminded her the warning I had given her before and she said, "my dogs were not on your property, they were out here on the street with me" I told her no they were not because I saw them and sent my boys after yours. She huffed and walked away. With all that I am leaning more twards it being her dogs that did it but have no way of proving it, and there for no way of haveing her replace my losses.

I am going to go out and do another head count, I'll let ya'll know the final number.

Oh no! This is horrible! I'm so sorry your having to deal with all this.

Hopefully more of your girls will show up.
Do you have a picture of your coop/egg boxes/set-up? Sometimes if we see what it looks like, it helps us brainstorm ideas.

Yes, I can definitely get some up today! Thanks so much!!

I'm right there with you. With my friends home flock either only half the ladies are laying or only half are laying in the boxes... and her roo is not the nicest... I don't even try to go looking for the eggs outside the coop; way, way to many brambles.

My roo is acting a bit weird too lately. I don't know if he's being threatening or what he's doing. This is my first flock so chicken/roo behavior isn't my forte. I guess if he attacks me, I'll know for sure. Lol

I love the paint ball thing!! We our out in the country too, on acreage as well. Our neighbors dog bit both of our kids one day, my son on the stomach and my daughter on the top of the head. Luckily no skin was broken. This is a big dog, easily 120lbs. He's lived on a chain his whole life but our neighbors recently decided he should be allowed to roam free. Well he came over to our house and next thing we know, he's nailed both our kids. We told our neighbors to keep him off our property or they'd be burying him. They claimed he was just playing, interesting that they know what he was doing even though they didn't witness the behavior and we did. Needless to say, he's been on our property twice while we were gone and once when we were home since then. This is why I love the paintball idea.

That dog bit 2 of your kids in one day and it is still alive !!!! Please don't take it that I am coming down on you. But I will tell ya straight .. If that were me there would be no more discussion and that dog would be no more concern. Lead injection, dirt nap problem solved!!! YES I am rather cold when it gets to that point and as much as I love my dog. IF he was ever caught killing stock or bit kids it would be a VERY sad day for me to deal with.

Yeah, that's right along my line of thinking too

Wa law does allow one to "protect" livestock. But some city, county laws may get in the way. See I live so far out in the styx they have to pipe daylight to me so most laws ........Well lets just say they aren't very effective here!!!

I know...we are IN Covington city limits unfortunately, and not allowed to fire weapons in the city...I wonder if there's a protection of livestock caveat. I will call city hall later and find out.

No, I completely understand where you are coming from, I'm not taking it as you coming down on me. It's been tricky to say the least. Our kids are friends with their kids and that would come to an end, we don't want that. We don't want issues with our neighbors and shooting their dog would definitely cause issues. However, with that being said, if he causes us anymore grief, it will be his last time. And like I said before, he didn't break the skin which he could have easily done if he wanted too. I just hope it doesn't go any further!!
