The empty, bank-owned house 2 doors down just sold last week, and the new owners moved in this weekend. I welcomed them to the neighborhood this morning with an 18 pack of fresh brown eggs. Figures it never hurts for your backyard chickens to make a good first impression!

Thanks Robin, but that's still almost 3 hours from Seattle for her, and she's almost 60 miles north of Seattle.... sigh...

It is closer than it is now though...we can always arrange a hand off.....ask around.
I am willing to meet someone in the Olympia area to hand off...I really need to stop & visit TotalColour...and do some shopping.

Are we supposed to dehydrate those? Does that help them start better? I just plant the nasties - they seem to come up OK. I haven't tried reseeding any of those others though.

I do dehydrate them on low heat...it speeds up the process where they go from green & soft, to brown & woody.
If I dumped them all in a jar without having them 'woody', then they would mold & rot.

Honestly, if you're wanting to buy birds, I might recommend against it. It is kind of a dumping ground. And, for those who have chickens as pets, and treat them as such, it is difficult to watch how they are handled. I understand that kind of handling is common, but I still have a hard time seeing people walking around carrying their birds by their wings. Our girls are handled very gentle here at home - yeah, we baby our girls.

Handling light weight poultry by their wings is just fine, prevents them flapping & harming themselves.
I prefer to hold their feet & their weight on 1 arm, and their back in the other arm as a hug....but others do it the other way.
I do grab & carry chickens by their feet, upside down...that works also.

That would be our reason to go there. My husband keeps looking at my hens... and thinking about dinner. I need to keep his stomach full and my hens safe.

But then who knows how the birds at the auction were treated/fed/cared for?

Birds for the stomach should be meat birds.
Layers usually are not much good for anything but stock & stew.
I myself have wasted a good 5 gallon tank of propane STEWING a 1 year old cock bird for dinner.....still tough as nails 3 days later.................THAT was when I was 18 years old.
BUY Cornish Cross Broilers from a hatchery, raise them up & butcher them for the freezer at 8 to 10 weeks old.
You'll LOVE them & never buy a store-bought chicken again !

she was hoping for nontoxic ways of dealing with the problem.

None that I know of......they do not die from permethrin products....but spraying with carb cleaner or brake cleaner & then dump a match on it works great !
The next day DH dug into the ground and found a cave about the size of a BOOT box...FULL of hornet comb, and sprayed again as some were emerging...this went on for 3 days til he killed them all.

Cloverleaf, we aren't sure yet if we are going to the show, but would really like too! If so, I can take Eliz Martin her faverolle for you. I will keep you posted. We will probably decide for sure tomorrow. If we don't go, I have a friend from Stanwood who for sure going, and I could ask him to get him for her too.

Perfect coop for the small flock.
New coop with covered run, two lockable nest boxes, and silo feeder.
7 ½ feet long, 4 deep, 5 tall.

I want to do the silo feeders on my coops...But my coops are much bigger.
