Whenever we lose a bird, we pick up a nice big perennial and place them in the hole before the plant goes in. I think it's a very nice way to remember a treasured animal. I'm sorry for your loss. Thanks everyone for the kind words. It just sucks because he was to be the basis of my Silkie flock.
I'm not really sure what happened. He had a mite infestation (no one else had or has any) that would not go away, or rather would get better but always return. Eprinex, Permectrin II, DE, lots of cleaning, nada. I just got some Sevin powder from KMHunter, but he was gone before I could dust him. He also had a weird hole on his body that looked like a bacterial infection or perhaps a cyst or tumor had burst. It was thoroughly disinfected and treated, and did not get better but did not really improve. He also lost a lot of weight, and stopped crowing altogether, which may sound like a blessing but probably meant he felt too weak to do so.I considered taking his body to the WSU avian lab for a necropsy, but didn't want to leave him there. I buried him with my rose bushes, where he used to like to go sun himself and graze.![]()

Hey Jessica... I'm guessing you got collard greens with your basket. I steamed some tonight. I'm allergic to pork, so I can't make traditional collard recipes. Thought I'd share a link to an optional (and fast) way of making collard greens: http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=recipe&dbid=323
