Thanks everyone for the kind words. It just sucks because he was to be the basis of my Silkie flock.

I'm not really sure what happened. He had a mite infestation (no one else had or has any) that would not go away, or rather would get better but always return. Eprinex, Permectrin II, DE, lots of cleaning, nada. I just got some Sevin powder from KMHunter, but he was gone before I could dust him. He also had a weird hole on his body that looked like a bacterial infection or perhaps a cyst or tumor had burst. It was thoroughly disinfected and treated, and did not get better but did not really improve. He also lost a lot of weight, and stopped crowing altogether, which may sound like a blessing but probably meant he felt too weak to do so.

I considered taking his body to the WSU avian lab for a necropsy, but didn't want to leave him there. I buried him with my rose bushes, where he used to like to go sun himself and graze.

Whenever we lose a bird, we pick up a nice big perennial and place them in the hole before the plant goes in. I think it's a very nice way to remember a treasured animal. I'm sorry for your loss.

Hey Jessica... I'm guessing you got collard greens with your basket. I steamed some tonight. I'm allergic to pork, so I can't make traditional collard recipes. OK So at the risk of being thought crazy and possibly getting scolded (maybe I am and maybe I deserve it). Guess what I did this eve? Went and dare I say it....... captured a swarm of bees. Yup got a call and they were in a blue berry bush in somebodies yard. It was a matter of I put them in a box and bring home or they would die. It's too late in the year for any swarm to survive.
Also remember that a swarm tend to be very mellow. See (forgive my example but) a swarm of bees are very much like a homeless person. They have no possessions and nothing to defend. They are simply trying to survive and that is why a swarm of bees are so mellow. In the past I have actually captured with out suiting up and bare hands. That IS NOT a RISK I take now.

My backed out ride has a music gig and it was cutting to close since the email exchange was way to slow and they never called... just emailed me even when I put my phone # in 3 times with can call or text....
Looks like 10 am tomorrow is gonna be pickup... I so want those for my garden!

Do you still need a ride? We have a van and could help in North Seattle.

I have to get all the rocks out of the van first which was on the agenda for tomorrow morning anyway.

Are they tough? Preds are a worry So I only send up my tough boogers that can take care of themselves well.

I just figured since I was going to visit a buddy of mine in Chicago who is a chicken peep too we'd go visit the farm and I'd try to get a few dozen home with me
MIght see if I can find more in the area too... although theres talk of visiting family in the Netherlands so I might have to finish my import papers and go get a few doz there too.... and maybe a dutch Shepard pup .... need a pup like a need a hole in my head but hey who knows

We make our collards with some chicken stock and garlic. They're pretty good that way.
