This is my first time incubating, so I have no idea how to answer your question. But, I do agree, there's a bit of stress involved in incubating. I was totally cool with it... until I saw a wiggling little embryo in the white egg. Wasn't expecting my stress level to go up - but it did. Suddenly I feel responsible for a little living creature, and I'm not so sure I know how to do everything right.

The last two nights I've had strange dreams about them. One dream - little baby "squinky" chicks hatched - and I asked them why they looked like tiny rubber chickens, and they said because I messed up the humidity and they dried into rubber chickens. Tiny talking rubber chickens... good grief!

They were also wearing little rubber Hawaiian shirts. Maybe I need a vacation.

OMG, that's hilarious! At least I haven't had that problem! Of course, I'm not done yet. Monday night might bring some interesting dreams.

Question for those of you who have done this chicken thing long enough that you aren't checking for eggs 10 times a day
lau.gif

Do you check for eggs any time you feel like it, even if there's a hen in the nest boxes, or do you wait until they're all empty so you don't disturb them? Sometimes when I go out there there's hens in the nest boxes and most of the time I leave them alone; I guess I'm afraid of scaring them out of the box and missing out on an egg for the day. Will they just come back if they're ticked off that I disturbed them?

I check multiple times on weekends. If there is a hen sitting, I reach under her. Most tolerate it, some peck me.

Still no more Leghorn eggs since the first two on Wednesday. Is it common for a POL pullet to lay one or two eggs then quit for a few days?

Yup :)

A bit off topic - but a fun idea for moms... Squinkies make awesome cup cake toppers for birthday parties. The kids absolutely love them and are always excited to go home with one or two. After they eat the cupcake, I give them the bubble that they cracked out of to take them home in.

I wonder if they make a chicken. Maybe I should suggest a back yard flock pack. That would be cool!

First let me say, I am glad ya'll liked my chick pics.
I had a terrible scare with the incubator tonight! I took the turner out of the incubator, added a saucer of water with a sponge, and opened the top vents per the manufacturer's instructions. Since this changed the air flow, I had to tweak the heat setting. I fiddled with it over almost an hour, and thought it had stabilized, so I didn't check it at all during my son's nap, when I was painting the pen. I came back inside, and the thermometer said 105!!! Holy crud! I ripped the lid off, turned it down, and watched it like a hawk for the next hour. When I put the lid back on it said 94, and it slowly went back up to 100.3 and then I got it back down to 99.3. I candled a few eggs and I see movement in all the embryos.

How bad is a temp spike at 19 days? If they're still alive now, are they going to be okay?

I can't wait to be done with this! It's way too stressful. If we ever incubate again, I'm going to buy a good chicken incubator.

Jennifer
Now I am no expert on this, sadly it took me three tries before I even hatched anything when I started but then it was a 90% hatch! But from what I have read of others, a spike like that for a short time as it was should be fine. Good luck with your hatch

! But to the point where my DH sais that maybe I should stop candleing the eggs so much and that I have to much yolk on the brain.

Ya know who does have a "chicken" toy?! Littlest Pet Shop, it is a awsome sparkley ROOSTER, but you can only get it by mail order and I am not sure if I waited to long to send mine out or not. You have to collect a special sticker from all the other pets when you buy them, and put them into a lil booklet then send it off. Oh I hope so very much that I can still get mine!
But the Squinkies is a great idea for cup cake toppers, or to even create a sene on a full cake. Hope you don't mind if I steel that from you?!

Welcome Leah,
You have come to the right place for crazy chicken friends
yippiechickie.gif
. And lots of information on all kinds of things in life if you want or need it. This thread moves really fast so have fun! You have quite a few of us that are not to far from ya, I know there are at least 3 in Woodinville and myself here in Mill Creek then the rest of these great people spread out a bit more from there. Be carful though, a lot of us are enablers and before you know it you will have 20+ chickens like some of us here!

Does anyone know where I can get one of these locally for cheaper than this? I really want an egg skelter so I don't have to refrigerate my own eggs. I just LOVE these ones!!
http://www.egg-skelter.co.uk/index.php

The Seattle Farm Coop just ordered a crate of silver egg skelters - they should be less expensive since they were purchased in bulk. When I find out the price I'll let you know.

Well I had some BEAUTIFUL chicks hatch yesterday!
love.gif
Three of them are from EE's and the other three well I forgot what color eggs they came from, whoops

. The Fathers are eather a really handsome white EE roo or a Road Island Red massive man. Eather way these chicks are just so pretty.
