Quote: That was what I was wondering too, if she's in shock. Also, I can't quite tell from the picture, but it almost looks like it's a nictitating membrane (third eyelid) instead of eye gunk? I'd say keep her warm, and quiet, or with a gentle friend, and keep trying with food (yogurt, scrambled eggs, other protein) and water.

UrbanEnthusiast - I have Denagard. It's terribly expensive but it's a very strong, broad spectrum antibiotic that hens don't ever develop resistance to, and you won't have an egg withdrawl period (you can eat eggs while she's being treated, if she's still laying). I am willing to give you some if you can come to my home. PM me if you want it. I'm in Covington, 98042, off Hwy 18, or you can take 167.

The only other suggestion I would say, is if you have a big tote or a dog kennel to keep her in and keep her quiet and warm. Scrambled eggs is definitely a good source, much better I think then trying to give her regular feed. Kim's right about the terrymicin it is pretty safe! It sounds like she may be a little shocky, and birds in general don't do well as patient's. But, if you can get her through the shock, keep her hydrated and get some food down her, she has a chance.
My husband is still sleeping, so I can't go get my chicken health hand book, but as soon as he wakes up, I'll see what else I can find.

Yea that's exactly what I'm thinking, but there still could be some ooze so the eye ointment isn't a bad idea, and if you stop by a feed store I would get some syringes, maybe 5 or 15 ml it's much easier to administer water, ect

This reminds me of when I was 17 and broke my arm. After 2+ hours in an empty ER. I got up and started for the door.  The nurse ask where I was going and I said to the vet in Goldendale I knew they would take care of me. Now talk about the express lane! They had me in x-ray, back in room and seen by a doc in very short time.

I grew up in Goldendale, would love to end up on the east side again someday...I miss the Gorge.

Alright, I'm on a phone at my BF's and can't get the quoting to work.

The next door neighbors also have chickens and they gave us an antibiotic they had called Baytril. According to the directions, we have enough for a full round. Yay! I already forced a dose down her throat. They also gave us an eye ointment called "Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone". No directions on it but I cleaned the goo out of her eye with a Q-tip then applied some of the ointment and her eye looks much better. She also also eaten a few bites of scrambled egg and swallowed some water, maybe only a tablespoon but it's a good sign. For now she's wrapped in a blanket in my lap and she seems better. Every few minutes she wakes up and swallows a few drops of water or maybe a tiny peck of egg.

Jess, that is a lovely offer and I do appreciate it. Hopefully it won't be necessary but I will definitely take you up on it if she doesn't improve.

Thanks everyone for your help!!!

Sorry I cannot tell you anything about the antibiotics. However, the fact that she is eating is a very good sign. keep up the good work! =)

I know you already put the ointment in the eye but you really don't want to use dexamethasone on an eye that you don't know the complete symptoms on. Dex is bad if she has a ulcerated cornea, the Neomycin and polymysin B part isn't bad, but yea, dex is a steriod, not to be use in a condition that is unknown. And you would have to get a vet to confirm that she doesn't have that issue. Terramycin is safer. If it's improved, I wouldn't put any more in, just in case, if it gets worse, I would get some of the terramycin. The fact that she is eating and drinking even a little is good.
