Wasp nest...

Yup, I'd say you're right! Clearly not bald faced hornets. Good plan about getting them at night, that is the best time. Although as I said before, if you can leave them and just observe, why not! Perfect viewing! Thanks for the closer pic.

I agree with Laurajean, in that I would leave them alone if you can and watch. This stuff doesn't happen every day. Remember the ant farms?

Yes, I would love updates!

So I'll leave it there and post updates if there are significant changes... I have never seen one like this before and may never again. When it comes to stuff like this, DH usually goes with what I decide. As long as it doesn't cause problems, we'll watch it. I can actually see some of the grubs in it, maybe I'll get to see them grow up?

Laurajean, that isn't to say that I have no interest in them scientifically, if you would like to add information it is welcome. I just wasn't looking for an ID on them because I saw my first nest like it just a few years ago. Up to that point, I thought they all lived in the ground, and I started researching them to see what I could find. I had no idea there was anything beneficial about them and had the mindset that if you found a nest, you killed them. After reading a bit, now I leave them if possible, I just put something to mark the area and tell the family to stay away. I have no idea of how you would pronounce those words so if you guys want to turn this into an education session, that would be a good place to start for me!

Well, as my father would say, there's book smart and there's street smart. One is not better than the other per say, they are just different. If you want scientific terms, you should ask tylt33. I don't use scientific terms, I just treat them for a living.

My partner, who has been an exterminator for 25 years, would have a good laugh (or be outright annoyed; more likely) if I dispatched a "d. arenaria job" to him instead of just saying yellow jackets. So we have little use for proper terminology.

Just reading this thread makes one aware of how varied opinions can be. I wonder what folks would want to do if the yellow jackets in their area looked like this one?
