Waste reducing feeders

OK sorry i'm don't know how to do pics here but when my wife gets home i will have her take pics and post them for you. This is sooo simple but i guess you will have to see pics. I'm a plumber so i deal with these things all the time. I'm sure if you printed out my description that someone at the hardware store can help you. By the way i don't glue any of the fittings so i can take them apart for easier cleaning.

Note the inward facing lip on the feeder. That is important. Also only enough room for them to get their beak in. If they can get their whole head in, then it is easier for them to bill food out.

Again, every good feed saving design I've seen incorporates the 1-1 1/4" lip. It seems to be a universal application.

This is what I use.

The container is an empty cat food bucket from a big box store.

The holes are cut with a hole saw ( used to cut holes for door knobs) about 2-3/4" diameter. Support the back of the plastic with a piece of wood while you are drilling.

I made the mailbox feeder to sit inside to store and regulate feed.

Very little waste.

The feeder is hanging by rope that can be adjusted to the correct height, (very important to control waste).

Yes the chickens put their heads inside to eat. My chickens took about 10 seconds to get used to it.

That works real well, as it seems you control their approach and access to the food. The lip does the same thing, but I must confess....
Your is extremely nice. I'd like to copy that picture for my files.

Nice one codybird. I don't have that kind of drill bit though. It really sucks not having very many tools. Course that means every project is a good excuse to buy a new tool!!!

I'm gonna try it on a round bucket. I can get free cake icing buckets from Wal-Mart.
