REALLY AL? Well first off... it's DEER hunter, not dear hunter. We DEER hunters, don't just shoot at everything that moves in the woods... well except for a few men that call themselves hunters that do indeed get buck fever and can't control themselves.

I could have over looked all the reference to finding a "man" to hunt with... but your last comment...... was really just plain insulting and F'ing ignorant toward woman. You must have a pretty low opinion of women to make such a generalized, stupid comment about us!

I've been going hunting and shooting since I was 8 yrs old, hunting large game on my own since I was 14...I've hunted 31 years....all alone, in the woods.....all by my wittle self. I've brought down, gutted and dragged out more bucks and does, than my father or husband(s), or brother! I'm a darn good hunter and I'm not afraid of anything!

Birdman can learn just as much, from a fellow woman hunter as a man, he should be open to learning from anyone, as thats how he'll learn and grow as a responsible, ethical outdoorsman.

Sillychicken: You just reminded me of when I used to go deer hunting with my DH. We'd get to the blind way before daylight and DH would go back to sleep. I'd wake him when there was anything interesting. One morning I woke him and said 'have you seen this one before?' He said 'yeah, that's that 8 pt.; he's been hanging out the last 2 wks or so.' He then settled back in for more sleep. I kept looking through the binoculars and said 'honey, isn't that a little kicker on the left brow tine?' He sat up and looked again and said 'it sure is; I guess its a 9 point' and closed his eyes again. I said 'honey, isn't that right tip split; look when he turns sideways.' He said 'huh, well its a 10 point.'

When I got it up to 12 points, he shot it...

I had my chance....

Outdoors women of this thread..
Please excuse some of statements made by males that were derogatory and generalized.

I know their is no good excuse for such things....but, you outdoors women have to admit, some of the things posted by "mother hen" or for that matter "father rooster" types was enough to get under the outdoors person skin...Whether you are male or female!!!!!

"oh..never go in the woods alone their could be snake, or bears" kind of stuff....

I swear that over protective attitude, is what makes kids sit in their rooms depressed playing stupid video games...

SO men and women who love the outdoors and do not fear entering the woods alone... Make your case why the "woods" can be a safer place than in front of the computer screen or at the shopping mall....

Young people should have a mentor to help them learn and understand the few dangers of the outdoors. One always needs to be thinking no time for being spacey, or daydreaming. Focus on your environment, become familiar with it. For this reason I strongly advocate scouting trips, get to know the lay of the land, your routes and so forth before you ever take a bow or gun with you... As for hunting, remember it is the experience in nature that counts, taking game is secondary...!!!! NEVER take a shot you are unsure of... If you wound an animal you need to know how to track.. Learn how to track before thinking about shooting at game.
Again taking game is secondary to being safe and absorbing what nature has to teach...

Me, I strongly dislike killing any animal.... I only hunt for meat, so a young spike bucks are my quarry..

Noodleroo, you should have just shot it! That a woke him up...

Birdman123 Consider bowhunting! longer season, quieter time in the woods.. IMO much more fun than gun hunting...

As a Hunter Education instructor in Michigan, I advise you to go out with a partner whenever possible. Also you used the word weapon, which is a poor choice of words. The proper term I use with my Hunter Education classes is Firearm. Hopefully, this is something that you should have learned in Hunter Education.

Well said Organics North, I am in the south paty of WI...
My Barn Owner has a hate/ hate relationship with a neighbor and a fellow who runs a meat processing place on his land.. they run coyotes, and are the types that shoot at anything that moves..
She won't allow them to hunt her woods. She has a neighbor, a sheriff, and a county park manager who hunt the land, she is never in need of venison, she usually gets a doe processed for her by one if not all of them.

Going out alone is dangerous and fool hardy. At any age.

"Going out alone is dangerous and fool hardy. At any age."

Some places more than others. We hunt in south Texas where the landscape is flat. I mean flat. Nothing to fall off of like rocks or cliffs, but you could step on a snake or twist your ankle or any number of things that might be a major inconvenience if you are by yourself. If you are an adult and have experience with a firearm and the terrain you will be hunting and want to go by yourself, then go and enjoy yourself; you know what the consequences are. It's completely up to you.

But if you are a child, under 18, as a responsible parent I would recommend not going alone. Its not a 'girl' or 'mom' thing; its a responsible parent thing.

And Organics North; you are right. I should have shot it....

Sorry about the rant... I can't just let that kind of comment go!

Alot about hunting alone, depends on where you're hunting. If you have private, or private leased land to hunt, hunting alone isn't as bad. The state/land will make a difference as well, in lower MI, I don't have to worry about bear or mt lion etc. (although we are getting a population of wild russian boar) A few coyotes are all I may have to worry about or rabid skunk! LOL! So hunting alone isn't as huge a deal. I will never hunt on public land in lower MI. Way too many hunters that don't know where other hunters are, so it truely can be dangerous.

I definatly agree that a young hunter should go with a mentor. My father was mine... actually we still hunt together (I don't always hunt alone) he's almost 80 (actually, I won't let him go out without me nowadays). In the begining, it was all about learning, tracking, how to move, stalk, sit still for hours.... lots of target practice before season.. What to look for, how to find them in the thick stuff, when they move...where to shoot, how the deer act when you get a good hit or not, etc. We always know where the other hunters are, we carry radios to communicate etc. I'm the only one who bow hunts in my family so I do that alone. When our neighbors get a deer, we always help them track and drag out if it comes on our land. Hunting is more than getting the biggest buck, it's about community, helping fellow hunters, neighbors and being in the great outdoors. It's about conservation, being a part of the world around you and being responsible.

My favorite part about hunting, is sitting up in my tree watching the world wake up. Watching Mother Nature at her finest... it cleanses my soul! I make sure I have a week off for opener gun season (St. Antlers day). We actually prefer to take doe, but won't pass up a nice buck if one comes by. We're not trophy hunters by any means.

My first deer was a button buck... as a joke, my dad mounted the nubs on a plaque! Every year we pull pranks on my dad. One year we (my sister and I) snuck out at midnight and took the seat off his tree stand and replaced it with a camo toilet seat, complete with magazine rack and toilet paper dispencer/roll screwed to the tree. Another year... well you'd have to know my dad.. He used to fart and follow up with a "here deer", saying that was his deer call. So one year I taped a remote fart machine under his blind chair and let er rip when he was inside. We try to keep it fun!

I wish Birdman all the luck in the world and hope he has the greatest sucess and, I hope he finds a hunting partner that can make his hunting experience as enjoyable as mine have been!

I already posted here,. but saw the thread come up again and thought I would tell ya why I agree with not letting you go alone,..

A very handsome, very smart young man of 16 went hunting alone in the woods here in south Louisiana,.. he was accidentally shot by another hunter but no one knew until they found his body the next day, the coroner said he would have lived if someone had gotten him to the hospital in the first couple of hours.
His brother, Big Dave,.. had told him not to go alone. Big Dave was never the same.
It was so sad,.. and completely avoidable.
