Water barrels...trapped air?

I received a few 55 gallon plastic barrels this week and I'd like to incorporate them into my water system for chickens. I'd rather not go cutting and hacking on them, in case I change my mind or want to repurpose them later for something else. I figure I can use the threaded bungholes to attach the piping and not have to alter the barrels in any way.

My first thought was to turn the barrel upside down and bring the inlet and the outlet up through the "bottom", but I wonder if this would work. Would the air be trapped in the barrel and not allow it to fill with water?

Your going to have to figure out some way for the air to escape. I would keep the barrel upright and drill a couple of 1/8” holes in the fitting you use in the bunghole if possible.
