Put some copper pennies or small pieces of copper pipe in the waterer. The water doesn't get slimy. Copper is a natural biocide and no, it won't harm your chickens.

I used a black bucket to prevent algae and it's also protected from direct sunlight.

I dump out the old water whenever I do a refill, that's about it. During the summer I'll refill every 5 days or so, during the winter it can be weeks since the chickens prefer a nasty muddy puddle or drips off a roof to clean water.

I have 3 gal buckets, unless it's cold out, I keep 2 of them out there, they'll go through that usually in about 5 days, if not I change it anyway. I know i don't like old stale water, guessing they don't either.

...... that being said they'll find the nastiest mud hole with stuff dripping in it from the mud flaps on my truck if you give them half a chance...
