I didn't understand the problem until using a much large water distributor. The drinking water gets dirty and back washes into the reservoir. It can happen quick, then all water stays dirty.
Mine also had a problem where it could stop releasing water, or continue overflowing. It was a strange pressure issue.
My solution was a small towel. Half is flat inside acting as a filter covering the reservoir hole. The other half is rolled up on the very bottom ensuring it stays slightly suspended. (Overflow was only an issue that resulted from attempts to keep water flowing)
